Position Summary
Under the direction of the Hospitality Manager, the Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking meals for residents in accordance with established menus, standardized recipes, and therapeutic diet requirements.
This is a hands-on production role focused on food quality, safety, and resident satisfaction within a retirement living environment.
Responsibilities
· Prepare and cook meals in accordance with approved menus, standardized recipes, and therapeutic diet requirements
· Ensure meals are prepared safely and served on time while maintaining proper food temperatures and sanitation standards
· Review daily menus and special diet requirements to ensure dietary restrictions are followed
· Set up kitchen equipment and maintain organized food preparation areas
· Monitor food quality, inventory, and storage practices including proper labeling and rotation
· Maintain food temperature logs and required documentation
· Supervise and support Dietary Aides during meal preparation and service
· Follow infection prevention, health and safety, and fire safety procedures
· Support positive teamwork within the kitchen and broader care team
· Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications & Experience
· Previous and relevant Cook experience is required. Experience in a retirement home, long-term care, healthcare, or institutional food service environment is considered an asset.
· Post-secondary education in Food and Nutrition Management, Culinary Arts, or a related field is considered an asset. Chef training, culinary management certification, or a Certificate of Qualification as a Cook is also considered an asset.
· Working knowledge of HACCP principles, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety, and sanitation standards is required.
· Strong knowledge of kitchen equipment, cookware, and food preparation techniques.
· Excellent teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills with a strong customer service focus.
· Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and perform effectively under pressure.
· Willingness and ability to learn and adapt to operational needs.
· Valid Food Handler’s Certificate and Smart Serve Certification are required.
· Employment is conditional upon satisfactory completion of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening and a two-step TB test in accordance with the Retirement Homes Act and site policy.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 10 hours per shift) in a commercial kitchen environment.
- The position involves frequent walking within the kitchen environment and maneuvering in confined spaces.
- The role includes pushing, pulling, and lifting dish racks, food carts, and bulk food items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Employees must be able to reach and lift items to and from shelving, occasionally using a small step ladder.
- The role involves repetitive arm movements during food preparation activities such as chopping, peeling, and portioning ingredients.
- Work is performed in warm environments and around commercial kitchen equipment and appliances.
- Manual dexterity is required to operate kitchen tools, open packaging, and handle food preparation equipment.
- The position requires the ability to organize work tasks effectively to minimize repetitive strain while completing daily production duties.
Schedule
Full-time hours based on operational needs. Shifts are primarily daytime with rotating weekend coverage required. Schedules provided in accordance with operational needs and applicable legislation.
