The Tunneling Company delivers specialized trenchless construction solutions across Western Canada, including Microtunneling, Guided Boring, Down-the-Hole Hammer, Auger Boring, Pipe Ramming, Pipe Jacking, and other underground infrastructure installation methods. We manage projects from planning and design through construction, providing innovative solutions for complex underground crossings.
We are seeking a motivated Field Labourer with experience in microtunneling, underground construction, trenchless technology, civil construction, or drilling operations to join our growing team. This position plays a key role in supporting field crews, maintaining equipment, assisting with tunneling operations, and ensuring safe and efficient project execution.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Provide manual labour and ground support for microtunneling, guided boring, pipe jacking, and trenchless construction operations.
- Assist with shaft setup, launch and reception pit activities, pipe handling, and tunneling support work.
- Load, unload, organize, and transport equipment, tooling, pipe, and construction materials.
- Support rigging, hoisting, and lifting operations in accordance with company safety procedures.
- Assist operators and supervisors with tunneling and drilling activities as required.
- Perform housekeeping duties to maintain a safe, clean, and organized worksite.
- Conduct routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment, tooling, pumps, generators, and support systems.
- Monitor and maintain fuel, hydraulic fluid, water, and slurry system levels as required.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, pumps, small equipment, and portable construction equipment safely and effectively.
- Operate company vehicles to pick up parts, materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Assist with pipe installation, spoil removal, drilling fluid management, and site logistics.
- Identify and communicate potential hazards, unsafe conditions, and equipment concerns.
- Participate actively in the company's safety management system through FLHAs, Hazard Assessments, toolbox meetings, inspections, and reporting procedures.
- Work effectively as part of a crew in challenging construction environments and varying weather conditions.
Experience & Training Requirements
Required
- 3+ years of experience in trenchless construction, microtunneling, underground construction, drilling, civil construction, oilfield, pipeline, or heavy construction environments.
- Previous experience supporting tunneling, pipe installation, drilling, excavation, or underground utility construction projects.
- Physically fit and capable of performing demanding labour-intensive work, including lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Experience working around heavy equipment and underground construction operations.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and experience using power tools and construction equipment.
- Fluent in English, both verbal and written.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean Driver's Abstract and reliable transportation.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
- Successful completion of a 50 lb Level II Health Assessment.
- Current safety certifications:

Preferred / Assets
- Previous experience working on microtunneling, pipe jacking, guided boring, HDD, auger boring, or other trenchless construction projects.
- Experience working around slurry systems, separation plants, pumps, spoil handling systems, or tunnel boring equipment.
- Underground utility, pipeline, or civil infrastructure construction experience.
- Experience with rigging and hoisting.
- Class 1 Driver's Licence.
- Equipment operation experience (excavators, loaders, telehandlers, skid steers, or similar equipment).
