Construction Operations Manager
Summit Building Co. | Vernon, BC | Full-Time
Salary: $90,000–$105,000/year + performance incentives
Help us elevate the way we build.
Summit Building Co. is looking for an experienced Construction Operations Manager to take a high-level role in the planning, coordination and continuous improvement of our construction and manufacturing operations.
This is a senior coordination and operational leadership position responsible for bringing together people, projects, schedules, quality control, code compliance, permitting, procurement and construction logistics.
We're looking for someone who can help us elevate the systems, processes and procedures behind how we build, identifying inefficiencies, strengthening existing systems and implementing better ways of working as Summit continues to grow.
This is not an entry-level project management or desk-only position. You need significant practical construction knowledge and the ability to see the bigger picture while staying connected to what's happening on the shop floor.
About the Role
As Construction Operations Manager, you'll oversee the planning and coordination behind Summit's active projects.
You'll work closely with our Shop Foreman and construction team while coordinating suppliers, subcontractors, engineers, inspectors, municipalities and certification agencies.
Your responsibility is to ensure the right people, information, materials and approvals come together at the right time, while continually improving the systems that make that possible.
What You'll Be Responsible For:
- Oversee day-to-day organization across active projects
- Coordinate staffing priorities with the Shop Foreman
- Maintain visibility across production schedules and upcoming requirements
- Identify and resolve scheduling, logistical and production bottlenecks
- Coordinate information between management, production, trades, suppliers and outside professionals
- Improve accountability and predictability throughout the construction process
Systems & Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate and improve existing operational processes
- Develop and standardize practical procedures and SOPs
- Identify inefficiencies and recurring communication breakdowns
- Improve project flow from pre-construction through completion
- Streamline scheduling, project management, QC and documentation
- Implement scalable systems that reduce errors, rework and unnecessary complexity
Scheduling & Logistics
- Develop and maintain project and master production schedules
- Establish milestones and track project progress
- Coordinate trades, deliveries, inspections and project dependencies
- Anticipate scheduling conflicts before they impact production
- Coordinate transportation, crane, delivery and installation requirements where applicable
Code, Compliance & Quality Control
- Oversee code and regulatory compliance across Summit's project types
- Coordinate requirements with engineers, inspectors, municipalities and certification agencies
- Manage applicable factory-built construction and CSA requirements
- Manage and continually improve Summit's QA/QC program
- Ensure inspections, documentation and corrective actions are properly completed
- Identify recurring deficiencies and implement preventative solutions
Experience with CSA A277 and/or CSA Z240 construction is a significant asset.
Permitting
- Coordinate building permit applications and required documentation
- Coordinate drawings, engineering and supporting information
- Communicate with municipalities and regional districts
- Respond to permit comments and coordinate revisions
- Track applications through approval
Trades & Procurement
- Coordinate subcontractors and specialty trades
- Ensure trades have the information and materials required
- Coordinate purchasing and material requirements
- Identify long-lead items and procurement risks
- Ensure critical materials align with production schedules
Health & Safety
- Oversee Summit's workplace safety program
- Maintain required policies, procedures and documentation
- Coordinate training, inspections and corrective actions
- Maintain compliance with WorkSafeBC requirements
- Continually improve safety procedures as operations evolve
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who understands the difference between how a project looks on a schedule and how it actually gets built.
You're naturally driven to organize, coordinate and improve. You think ahead, recognize when information is falling through the cracks and look for solutions to the underlying problem rather than continually putting out the same fire.
You can lead without micromanaging, communicate effectively across different levels of a project and move comfortably between a construction drawing, production schedule, permit application, QC inspection and conversation on the shop floor.
Experience & Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive construction management, supervision or leadership experience, or equivalent field and management experience
- Strong practical knowledge of residential construction
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Working knowledge of building codes and construction standards
- Experience with permitting and municipal approvals
- Strong scheduling, planning and organizational abilities
- Experience coordinating trades, suppliers and construction professionals
- QA/QC and workplace safety experience
- Experience improving operational systems and procedures
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Comfortable with digital project management and scheduling systems
Significant Assets
- Modular, manufactured or prefabricated construction experience
- CSA A277 or CSA Z240 experience
- Strong BC Building Code knowledge
- Building science or BC Energy Step Code experience
- Journeyperson certification or substantial field experience
- Experience developing SOPs or QC systems
- Buildertrend experience
Compensation
$90,000–$105,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications, with potential performance-based incentives.
Performance incentives may be tied to project scheduling, production efficiency, quality control, safety and compliance, and successful implementation of improved systems and procedures.
