About the team
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation team of accounting professionals oversee all accounting and financial activities, and establish financial policies, procedures, internal controls and reporting systems.

What you’ll do
The Senior Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements, support the audit process and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. This position provides timely and reliable financial information for decision-making and for the effective operation of various program areas. In addition, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the analysis, reconciliation and recording of investments.

Responsibilities include:

Prepare, compile and analyze financial information to prepare monthly and annual working paper files, financial statements and notes.
Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
Ensure financial reporting compliance with provincial and federal legislation, as well as with the CPA Canada Standards.
Safeguard assets and accurate and timely recording of all transactions by ensuring compliance with internal controls.
Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met.
Prepare financial reports on a recurring and ad-hoc basis.
Utilize accounting standards and principles to compile and analyze financial information to prepare financial statements.
Apply professional judgement to determine estimates and accruals in the preparation of financial statements.
Resolve accounting discrepancies and irregularities internally and with actuaries, consultants and auditors.
Assist with year-end audit by preparing the required information and communicating with the auditors.
Advise the Manager, Accounting of issues which affect cash flow, expenses and balances.
Maintain complete and accurate investment schedules, reconciliations and analysis.
Provide in-depth analysis of variances on a quarterly and annual basis.
Act as a financial business partner with leaders across the organization.
Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external service providers including auditors, actuaries, financial institutions and consultants.
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations.
Prepare daily online bank transfers, payroll remittances and vendor payments (including wires).
Assist in and provide services for budget monitoring.
Provide back-up services for Payroll Officer for LTD and STRP benefit payroll.

What you’ll bring

Undergraduate degree with an accounting major; combined with 4-5 years of progressively responsible experience.
Knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards (IFRS, ASPE, Non-profit organizations and Pensions).
Knowledge of accounting and report writing systems and ability to effectively use Microsoft applications.
Knowledge of accounting for investments.
Demonstrated knowledge of institutional investments.
Demonstrated organizational skills in organizing own work.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle work requiring a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Demonstrated initiative in undertaking assignments and completing work within strict timelines.
Demonstrated application of analytical and problem-solving skills.
Superior interpersonal skills in developing and maintaining effective working relationships.
