Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
The Newborn Screening Ontario (NSO) Laboratory Manager works in collaboration with medical/scientific and other NSO staff and program partners to ensure effective delivery of screening and diagnostic laboratory services.

Participating in the development of NSO goals, objectives and strategies and actively supporting and working toward the implementation of NSO strategies

Enabling effective communication between NSO leadership and laboratory staff as well as between the laboratory and other NSO teams
-
Acting as a liaison and representing the interests of NSO and/or CHEO by participating on committees, establishing networks and building partnerships within CHEO and with other external laboratories and partners

Compiling, interpreting, evaluating, and documenting NSO laboratory statistics and quality metrics

Promoting an effective working environment that enhances quality, with emphasis on safety, professional ethics, effective communication, and team participation

Effectively managing human resources including: hiring and scheduling staff, managing staff attendance and performance, conducting performance appraisals and dealing with performance related issues, imposing discipline and recommending terminations, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and ensuring staff have the required resources to carry out their functions

Monitoring laboratory budgeting and expenses

Ensuring that laboratory staff follow the standards of practice as outlined by their professional college or training program and are accountable for their actions

Maintaining competence through educational learning activities

Supporting professional development and learning opportunities for laboratory staff

Performing work and ensuring that others perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures

Criminal Record Check (CRC) (Essential)

Current registration as an active technologist with the CMLTO and license in the relevant disciplines or equivalent qualifications with recognition from the CMLTO Essential)

College Diploma and/or Bachelor of Science (Essential)

Comprehensively use relevant computer technology (Essential)

Demonstrated ability to ensure timely completion of tasks by adjusting priorities as required (Essential)

Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing (Essential)

Deal effectively with internal and external customers (Essential)

Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety (Essential)

Bilingual (English/French) (Preferred)
Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
