The Opportunity

We are seeking a practical, business-focused lawyer with 2 to 3 years of post-call experience to join our Corporate & Legal Services team at our corporate office in Okotoks, Alberta. This role offers broad exposure to commercial contracting, employment and labour matters, corporate legal work and strategic business initiatives in a dynamic in-house environment.
Position Summary
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Junior Legal Counsel will provide legal advice and support to Mullen Group and its portfolio of operating companies. The successful candidate will take primary responsibility for commercial contract review and negotiation, employment and labour law matters, legal risk management, litigation support and legal assistance on corporate initiatives. This role is suited to a lawyer who enjoys working directly with business leaders, providing practical solutions and developing as a trusted in-house advisor.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Contracts & Business Operations
- Draft, review and negotiate customer, transportation, logistics, warehousing, master service, procurement, vendor, confidentiality, real estate and lease agreements.
- Provide practical risk assessments and clear contract recommendations to business stakeholders.
- Develop, maintain and improve contract templates, guidance materials and legal playbooks.
- Advise on contract interpretation, performance issues and commercial disputes.
Employment & Labour Law
- Advise management and Human Resources on employment agreements, workplace investigations, discipline, terminations, accommodations, human rights, restrictive covenants, confidentiality obligations and employment standards compliance.
- Review and update employment-related policies, procedures and templates.
- Assist with labour relations and collective agreement interpretation, as required.
- Coordinate with external employment counsel on significant matters and litigation.
Litigation & Risk Management
- Assist with the management of claims, disputes, collections and litigation matters.
- Coordinate with external counsel and business unit representatives, including gathering instructions and supporting documentation.
- Evaluate legal risk and settlement options and maintain legal matter reporting and tracking systems.
- Support legal risk mitigation strategies across the organization.
Corporate & Strategic Initiatives
- Support mergers and acquisitions through due diligence, transaction support and post-acquisition integration projects.
- Assist with corporate governance, subsidiary maintenance and restructuring initiatives.
- Participate in cross-functional projects involving Legal, Human Resources, Operations, Finance and executive leadership.
- Provide legal support for strategic growth and business development initiatives.
Legal Operations
- Prepare legal memoranda, recommendations, presentations and other business-focused communications.
- Deliver practical training and educational sessions to operating companies.
- Monitor developments in employment, commercial and transportation law.
- Contribute to the continued development and modernization of the Corporate & Legal Services function.
Qualifications
Required
- Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB from an accredited law school.
- Member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta.
- 2 to 3 years of post-call legal experience gained in a law firm.
- Strong analytical, drafting, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Practical, responsive and business-oriented approach to legal advice.
Preferred
- Meaningful experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and advising on employment law matters.
- Experience supporting transportation, logistics, industrial or multi-jurisdictional operations.
- Exposure to corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, litigation or regulatory compliance.
- Experience working directly with senior executives and operational leaders.

Pay: $100,000.00-$125,000.00 per year
