Position: Sales Clerk
Reporting to: Gallery Manager
Location: I-Hos Gallery, 3310 Comox Rd, Courtenay, BC
Schedule: Full-time(35 hours per week). The schedule is based on the gallery’s operating needs and may include Saturdays, special events, and workshops.
Wage: $21-$23 per hour based on experience
Position Summary
The Sales Clerk provides welcoming, knowledgeable, and professional service to visitors and customers of I-Hos Gallery. The position supports daily retail operations through sales transactions, product and artist knowledge, inventory control, merchandising, visitor information, online order preparation, and general gallery upkeep.
The Sales Clerk is expected to represent I-Hos Gallery and K’ómoks Economic Development Corporation with professionalism, respect, cultural awareness, and a strong commitment to customer service. Additional duties may be assigned by the Gallery Manager as required.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Sales
- Welcome customers and visitors and provide courteous, informed, and responsive service
- Process cash, debit, and credit card transactions accurately using the point-of-sale system
- Respond to general inquiries in person, by telephone, and by email, and take messages as required
- Provide information about gallery products, artists, Northwest Coast art, and the Comox Valley
- Promote gift certificates, gallery events, workshops, social media channels, and other gallery initiatives
- Support opening and closing procedures and maintain security awareness throughout each shift
Inventory, Merchandising & Online Sales
- Receive, tag, verify, display, and organize merchandise and supplies
- Assist with stock control, inventory counts, order verification, and reconciliation as directed
- Maintain accurate product information and develop strong knowledge of artists, suppliers, and merchandise
- Assist with Shopify and online sales, including product updates, order preparation, packaging, and shipping
- Prepare gift certificates and customer orders in accordance with gallery procedures
- Change window and in-gallery displays seasonally or as directed by the Gallery Manager
Gallery Operations & Housekeeping
- Maintain clean and attractive display cases, jewelry counters, shelving, floors, washrooms, entrance areas, and staff/customer spaces
- Keep visitor information and tourism brochures organized, stocked, and current
- Assist with events, workshops, artist activities, promotions, and special projects
- Follow gallery policies, cash-handling procedures, health and safety requirements, and emergency procedures
- Work collaboratively with coworkers and provide guidance or support to new staff when requested
- Complete other duties assigned by the Gallery Manager to support the successful operation of I-Hos Gallery
Qualifications & Skills Preferred
- Previous retail, tourism, gallery, or customer service experience
- Experience with cash handling, point-of-sale systems, scanning, and bagging procedures
- Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional team environment
- Mature, positive, dependable, and respectful attitude and professional presentation
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to complete tasks accurately
- Comfort using email, basic office technology, social media, Shopify, or other online sales systems
- Knowledge of Northwest Coast art, Indigenous artists, culture, and history, or a willingness to learn
- Knowledge of the Comox Valley and local tourism information is an asset
- Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift or move merchandise and shipping materials
- Bondable and able to maintain confidentiality and follow security procedures
