About John Slaman Greenhouses Ltd:

Quality is the best way to describe the fresh cut flowers grown at John Slaman Greenhouse Ltd operating as Slaman’s Quality Flowers. With over 250,000 sf of climate-controlled greenhouses, Slaman’s provides locally grown cut chrysanthemums and lisianthus throughout Ontario, Eastern Canada and the North-Eastern United States. The Slaman’s team utilizes modern growing techniques, agri-technology for climate-controlled greenhouses to improve production, and environmentally sustainable practices to reduce our carbon footprint while providing customers with quality flowers.

How you will contribute as part of the Slaman’s team:

The Junior Bookkeeper has day-to-day responsibility for financial processes and data entry to support the finance department. The role will maintain financial records using QuickBooks, process company payroll weekly and bi-weekly as scheduled, and other duties as required to support financial and administrative processes of the company.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage client and vendor accounts, interact with clients and vendors (in-person, phone, email, and online), and support financial department needs within company policies and guidelines
Maintaining Financial Records: Accurately recording and processing financial transactions, including accounts payable and receivable.
General Ledger Maintenance: Updating and maintaining the general ledger.
Data Entry: Entering financial data into accounting systems and spreadsheets.
Payroll: Weekly and Bi-weekly payroll processing and payment using Ceridian and QuickBooks.
Reconciliations: Assisting with bank reconciliations, credit card, and other account reconciliations.
Month-End Processes: Supporting the month-end close process by preparing reports and schedules.
Reporting: Providing reports, including preparing financial reports from QuickBooks and providing to colleagues or management as required.
Document Management: Organizing and maintaining financial documents and records.
Tax Preparation: Assisting with tax preparation and providing information and support to accounting services team.

What will you need to succeed:

Experience

Entry-level

Position requires either training and education credentials or 3 years experience in a similar role.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

No requirements but prior training or education is always an asset.
Education or credentials (international included) will be accepted as a replacement for experience.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

Basic Accounting Knowledge: Understanding of fundamental accounting principles.
Proficiency in Accounting Software: Experience with accounting software QuickBooks.
Microsoft Office Suite: Strong skills in Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Attention to Detail: Accuracy and meticulousness in handling financial data.
Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Communication Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills.
Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in financial data.

Position Details:

Employment type: Part-Time

Duration of employment: Permanent after 3-month probation period

Hours of work: Approximately 20 hrs/week

Schedule: Set schedule - Monday to Friday

Work location: In-person 212 Maple Ave Greenhouse Site

Salary Range: $20.00-23.00 per hour; prior experience and skill set considered when setting salary

Reports to: Operations Manager
