About the role:
The Senior Process Control Engineer is a key member of the Côté Gold Mill Maintenance Engineering team, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, and other site departments to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the processing plant. This role is responsible for the design, development, engineering, implementation, and continuous improvement of Côté Gold’s process control systems to maximize operational performance and equipment reliability.
The Senior Process Control Engineer plans, coordinates, and executes process control initiatives and projects, while monitoring system performance and identifying opportunities for optimization. They provide regular updates on project progress, contribute to business improvement and capital initiatives, and serve as the site’s technical authority on process control systems. In addition, the role provides mentorship, technical guidance, and training to Process Control Technicians, supporting the development of site capability and ensuring best practices are consistently applied.
Responsibilities:
Provide direction and mentorship to Process Control Technologists, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Act as the site technical authority for the Process Control System (PCS), ensuring its safe, reliable, and effective operation.
- Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve process control strategies, logic, interlocks, alarms, permissives, operator interfaces, and advanced control applications.
Analyze operating and historical process data to identify opportunities for optimization, improved reliability, and increased operational efficiency.- Collaborate with Operations, Metallurgy, Maintenance, Reliability, and Instrumentation teams to troubleshoot issues and implement sustainable solutions.
- Monitor and optimize control loop performance to maximize plant stability, throughput, and recovery.
- Provide technical support for process control software, servers, networks, communications infrastructure, PLCs, MCCs, VFDs, and third-party system integrations.
- Ensure operational and engineering decisions are supported by sound data analysis and engineering principles.
- Lead process control capital projects and system modifications in accordance with site standards and Management of Change procedures.
- Develop, review, and approve technical designs, programming standards, functional descriptions, schematics, drawings, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare technical justifications, scopes of work, and project plans, while reporting progress and outcomes to stakeholders.
- Coordinate commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, and field support activities for new and modified systems.
- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance strategies, lifecycle plans, spare parts inventories, and system audits to ensure long-term asset reliability.
- Work with vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to support system upgrades, expansions, and maintenance activities.
- Support IT/OT initiatives to maintain the security, integrity, and availability of process control system assets.
- Identify, evaluate, and implement best practices and emerging technologies in process control engineering.
- Lead initiatives that improve safety, reliability, productivity, energy efficiency, and overall plant performance.
- Conduct benchmarking, research, and technical evaluations to support business improvement and strategic decision-making.
- Develop and maintain site process control standards, governance practices, and engineering methodologies.
- Deliver training and knowledge transfer to Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering personnel to strengthen site-wide process control capability.
- Remain current with industry trends, regulatory requirements, and technological advancements to support continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Key Skills & Knowledge:- Post-secondary degree in Process Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field is required.
- Registration (or eligibility to register) as an Engineer in Ontario (PEO).
Relevant Experience:- A minimum of 8 years of related work experience.
- Previous experience in mineral processing (specifically gold processing) is considered an asset.
Skills & Strengths, We Value:- Advanced Process Control Systems Expertise – Extensive experience programming, configuring, and troubleshooting PLC, SCADA, motor control, and variable frequency drive systems.
- Control System Design & Optimization – Strong capability in developing control logic from P&IDs and control narratives, including process analysis, system troubleshooting, and PID loop tuning.
- Industrial Data & Infrastructure Management – Experience with historian databases, virtualized server environments, process control networks, and system integration.
- Communication – Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to lead technical initiatives, prioritize competing demands, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
