The Opportunity
Otter Wise Talent Solutions is proud to partner with a leading Canadian industrial construction organization to recruit an experienced Instrumentation Superintendent – Industrial Construction supporting major industrial projects throughout Canada.
Reporting to the Construction Manager, this position is responsible for leading the execution of instrumentation and control (I&C) construction scopes across complex industrial projects within the mining, energy, petrochemical, manufacturing, water, infrastructure, and heavy industrial sectors.
The Instrumentation Superintendent will oversee field operations involving instrumentation installation, calibration, PLC and DCS integration, loop checking, commissioning, analyzers, transmitters, control valves, field devices, and industrial control systems while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest standards of quality.

Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Leadership
- Lead instrumentation and control construction activities from mobilization through project completion.
- Participate in constructability reviews, bid reviews, and project planning activities.
- Develop and manage detailed construction schedules and short-interval look-ahead plans.
- Coordinate labour, subcontractors, equipment, materials, vendors, and internal project resources.
- Monitor project productivity, cost performance, and schedule milestones.
- Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Support project change management activities throughout construction.
- Ensure all instrumentation construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and client requirements.
Instrumentation & Control Operations
- Supervise installation, calibration, testing, commissioning, and startup of instrumentation and control systems.
- Coordinate installation of transmitters, analyzers, control valves, field devices, instrumentation tubing, impulse lines, and associated equipment.
- Review and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, control schematics, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Ensure instrumentation systems are installed in accordance with engineering requirements, industry standards, and manufacturer recommendations.
- Coordinate PLC, DCS, SCADA, and industrial control system integration activities.
- Oversee loop checking, calibration, functional testing, and system verification.
- Support pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, and turnover activities.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution of instrumentation installation, calibration, and system integration challenges.
- Ensure all testing, calibration, commissioning, and turnover documentation is completed accurately.
Health, Safety & Quality
- Champion a proactive safety-first culture across all instrumentation construction activities.
- Lead toolbox talks, field inspections, and hazard assessments.
- Work closely with Environmental, Health, and Safety teams to enforce site-specific safety programs.
- Ensure compliance with client safety requirements, company policies, and applicable legislation.
- Monitor workmanship to ensure all instrumentation installations meet project specifications and contractual quality standards.
- Coordinate inspections, testing, commissioning, calibration, and turnover documentation.
- Promote continuous improvement across safety, quality, productivity, and field execution.
Leadership & Client Support
- Mentor General Forepersons, Forepersons, Journeyperson Instrumentation Technicians, Apprentices, and field personnel.
- Foster a respectful, collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.
- Coordinate closely with Project Management, Engineering, Quality, Project Controls, Procurement, and Construction teams.
- Act as the construction lead for instrumentation scopes throughout project execution.
- Interface with clients and stakeholders to provide project updates and resolve field-related concerns.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Support workforce development through coaching, mentoring, technical guidance, and performance management.
Qualifications
- Minimum five (5) years of industrial construction experience with a significant focus on instrumentation and control systems.
- Previous experience in a Superintendent, General Foreperson, or senior supervisory position.
- Extensive experience supervising industrial instrumentation and control construction activities.
- Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation systems, PLCs, DCS, SCADA, analyzers, transmitters, control valves, and field devices.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, schematics, specifications, and technical documents.
- Experience coordinating calibration, loop checking, testing, commissioning, startup, and system integration activities.
- Strong understanding of instrumentation quality control and inspection requirements.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors, union trades, vendors, and internal project stakeholders.
- Strong planning, scheduling, organizational, and resource-management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple work fronts within complex industrial environments.
- Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder-management, and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, inclusion, and operational excellence.
- Legally authorized to work in Canada.

- Journeyperson Instrumentation Technician Certification.
- Equivalent industrial instrumentation leadership experience.
- Fly-In/Fly-Out or rotational project experience.
- Experience supervising union and non-union workforces.
- Experience leading major industrial capital projects.
- Experience supporting fabrication, modularization, maintenance, and turnaround projects.
- Knowledge of CSA, ISA, API, and industrial instrumentation standards.
- Valid driver's licence.

- Competitive salary of $130,000 - $165,000, depending on experience and qualifications.

Work Environment & Travel
- Full-time permanent position supporting industrial construction projects throughout Canada.
- Site-based leadership role requiring travel to project locations.
- Fly-In/Fly-Out and rotational project assignments.
- Typical rotations may include:
- 14 Days On / 7 Days Off
- 10 Days On / 4 Days Off
- Candidates must be willing and able to travel and work on-site based on project requirements.
- Projects may be located across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and other regions of Canada.
