Position Summary
The Driller / Blaster is responsible for safely and efficiently carrying out drilling and blasting operations in support of civil infrastructure construction. Work includes trench blasting, rock excavation for underground utilities, road cuts, and quarry operations as required by project conditions. This role is primarily based at remote fly‑in project sites and follows a 3‑week in / 1‑week out rotation.
The successful candidate will work closely with project supervision, equipment operators, and safety personnel to ensure blasting activities are completed in compliance with all applicable regulations and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Drilling Operations
- Set up, operate, and maintain drilling equipment to establish blast holes in accordance with approved blast designs and site conditions
- Drill to specified depths, spacing, and patterns for trenching, road cuts, and excavation support
- Perform routine equipment inspection, servicing, and minor field repairs
Blasting Operations
- Prepare blast sites including hazard assessments, exclusion zones, and safe-distance determinations
- Load explosives, install detonators, and connect initiation systems in compliance with regulations and blast designs
- Conduct pre‑blast and post‑blast inspections, including misfire procedures if required
- Coordinate blasting activities with site supervision to minimize disruption to ongoing work
Safety & Compliance
- Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and provincial/federal regulations
- Maintain working knowledge of the Explosives Act of Canada and applicable provincial standards
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and incident investigations as required
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete daily drilling and blasting records, including hole depths, quantities, and blast results
- Record operational data for quality assurance, vibration control, and regulatory compliance
- Assist with blast reports and supporting documentation when required
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Certified Blaster (provincial or equivalent Canadian certification)
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in drilling and blasting, preferably in civil construction environments
- Strong understanding of safe explosives handling, storage, and transportation
- Valid Driver’s License
Preferred / Asset
- Experience with trench blasting and rock excavation for underground services
- Ability to read blast designs, drawings, and site layouts
- Experience working at remote or fly‑in project sites
