Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator/Material Handler

Travel: Charter from Edmonton, AB or Yellowknife, NT to Nunavut project site
Summary: The Heavy Equipment with Class 1 Licence is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment and tractor/trailer units in support of logistics, material handling, and laydown yard activities. This role supports the loading, offloading, transportation, and organization of shipping containers, breakbulk cargo, and materials throughout designated laydown areas and operational sites.
The successful candidate will maintain a strong focus on safety, equipment care, operational efficiency, and housekeeping while working in challenging and remote environmental conditions.. This position maintains a drug- and alcohol-free environment with pre-employment testing and a criminal record check.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Safety & Compliance
- Comply with all Health, Safety, and Environmental standards and expectations.
- Adhere to all company policies, departmental procedures, and operational rules.
- Ensure all safety protocols and safe work practices are followed at all times.
- Immediately report any incidents, accidents, damage, unsafe conditions, or near misses.
- Report any occurrences, violations, or activities that may impact safety, security, operations, or company reputation.
- Participate in all required safety meetings, training sessions, and emergency response drills.
Equipment Operation
- Safely operate heavy equipment, forklifts, loaders, telehandlers, skid steers, and tractor/trailer units in various weather and site conditions, including severe and extreme environments.
- Perform loading and offloading of shipping containers, breakbulk freight, and oversized materials.
- Transport materials, equipment, and cargo to designated laydown areas and operational locations as directed.
- Organize and maintain material laydown yards to support efficient operations and material accessibility.
- Secure all loads for transport, including proper strapping, slinging, and load securement practices to ensure materials remain safe and stable throughout transportation.
- Operate loading/unloading equipment and ground support equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Equipment Inspections & Maintenance
- Conduct pre-start inspections and routine equipment checks prior to operation.
- Complete pre/post operational inspections during equipment handover and takeover, documenting any damage or mechanical concerns.
- Monitor equipment performance and promptly report maintenance or operational issues.
- Maintain assigned equipment in a clean, organized, and serviceable condition.
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
Certifications & Licensing
- Valid Class 1 Driver’s License with tractor/trailer experience.
- Heavy Equipment Operator certification(s).
- Forklift, loader, telehandler, and skid steer operating experience. Forklifts up to 60,000lb capacity and various sizes of Loader. Container Stacker Experience is a Plus.
Experience
- Minimum of five (5) years of related heavy equipment and material handling experience.
- Experience operating in industrial, mining, construction, or remote site environments considered an asset.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of safe load securement and material handling practices.
- Ability to safely operate equipment in extreme weather and remote site conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 25 kg.
- Ability to repeatedly climb in and out of heavy equipment throughout the workday.
- Ability to maintain basic operational and inspection records.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Reliable, safety-focused, and team-oriented with a strong work ethic.
Work Environment
This position operates in a remote industrial environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, heavy equipment traffic, uneven terrain, and physically demanding tasks. The successful candidate must be capable of working safely and efficiently in challenging operational conditions while supporting overall site logistics and material handling activities.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Day rate: $600.00 for 12-hour shifts.
- Travel allowance to/from Edmonton, AB or Yellowknife, NT.
