Role Summary
A Clinical Nurse Educator plays a crucial role in the academic and professional development of nurses and Residential Support Workers (RSW) as well as students. They are responsible for designing, implementing, evaluating, and revising educational programs tailored to help nurses and RSW’s excel in their careers. Clinical Nurse Educators combine clinical expertise and educational theory to provide high-quality learning experiences. This position demands a fine balance of teaching skills, clinical experience, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
The Clinical Nurse Educator will provide direct support, consultation, and education to staff caring for clients with medical complexities and life-sustaining equipment within a community clinical setting. The Clinical Nurse Educator is a member of Safehaven’s leadership team with a core focus on education for staff, professional development, and collaboration with external partners in the community. Reporting to the Manager, Quality , the Clinical Nurse Educator provides leadership and development of best practice guidelines, policies and procedures and clinical overview of client population.
Job Description
Leadership & Advocacy
- Member of Safehaven’s leadership team with a core focus on education for staff, professional development, and collaboration with external partners in the community.
- Provides leadership, development and dissemination of clinical best practice guidelines, policies and procedures, and clinical overview of client population.
- Works closely with interdisciplinary teams (internally and externally) to support the development of policies, procedures, and best practice guidelines related to nursing practice and new programs.
- Demonstrates ability to build partnerships and collaborative relationships with external community partners to support ongoing program growth and development.
- Active member of the internal Safehaven On-call team.
- Supplement staffing at Safehaven locations when needed.
- Works closely with interdisciplinary team members internally and externally in the clinical development and implementation of a transitional care program with community partners.
Teaching & Curriculum Development
- In collaboration with other members of the Safehaven team, develop education material that meets the learning needs of staff and students.
- Demonstrates the ability to prepare educational material and present to diverse audiences using various methods (in-person, virtually).
- Creates a supportive learning environment that encourages constructive feedback to inspire growth and development to others.
- Ensures provision of client and family-centered care to individuals with medical complexities, chronic conditions, and life-sustaining technology in a home-like setting.
- In consultation with other health care professionals and organizations (Public Health, Infectious disease practitioner, epidemiologist), communicate education and action plans regarding infection prevention and control.
- Provide direct care support (vaccinations, COVID-19 swabbing, rapid testing) and education (e.g., external controlled acts) to organizations and external stakeholders in the community.
Research & Scholarship
- Engage in scholarly activities and research projects
- Keeping current with pedagogical best practices and adult learning principles.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of nursing research and clinical best practices, and applying these insights to enhance clinical practice at Safehaven.
- Leading and developing innovative learning experiences for Safehaven staff and students such as leveraging simulation, blended learning models, competency-based education, and just-in-time training.
- Seeking opportunities to showcase education innovations internal and external to Safehaven.
- Coaching & Mentorship
- Provides education and evaluation of staff on professional and performance issues.
- Supervises clinical practice and provides feedback to staff and students.
- Evaluates staff and student performance through assessments and examinations.
- Provide guidance on best clinical practices and ethical issues.
- Evaluation & Quality Improvement
- Assess and evaluate nursing performance and professionalism through direct observation, competency assessments, and structured feedback mechanisms.
- Developing and applying tools for evaluating clinical skills, professional behaviours, and adherence to best practice standards.
- Conducts investigations and reviews into professional or conduct issues of staff and recommends appropriate responses including communication of findings to affected employees that may include formal discipline in conjunction with the Director.
- Contributes to and participates with other clinical leadership in the conducting of performance reviews with staff.
- Provide evaluation and audits of client health care records offering recommendations for quality improvement.
- Assesses client’s needs, collects and compiles data, identifies problems, develops, communicates, implements, and evaluates care plans.
- Provide evaluation and audits of client health care records offering recommendations for quality improvement and education opportunities.
- Contribute to Accreditation Canada and MCCSS Continuous Readiness.
Collaboration & Partnership

Qualifications & Experience
- University Degree in Nursing (BScN); graduate level preparation, such as an MN, MScN, MEd. an asset.
- Registered Nurse with current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
- CNA Certification in a relevant specialty such as CpedN(C), CRN(C), and CCHN(C) is an asset.
- Certified in Infection Control (CIC) preferred; not an asset
- Minimum five (5) years of recent and relevant experience
- Previous Nursing experience in pediatrics; or working with chronic conditions, medical complexities and technologies is an asset
- Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S) program, Level II: Basic Rescuer certification
- Theoretical and practical experience in adult education including educational program planning, development and evaluation
- Demonstrates excellence in teaching, problem-solving and critical analysis
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, interdisciplinary team members, clients and their families
- Strong communication skills and an ability to quickly adapt to evolving workplace environments
- Understands and delivers to meet the goals and strategic objectives of the organization and the ability to quickly adapt to evolving workplace environment
- Strong computer skills, with excellent oral and written communication skills
- Successful applicants must provide a recent satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal reference check and medical clearance certificate
- Travel is required for this position, the successful candidate must have access to reliable transportation
- Ability to perform delegated tasks independently or with minimal supervision
- At any time, Safehaven may need to move staff to other locations based on operational needs.
