The Verschuren Centre is an independent clean technology development and deployment facility. We offer client-tailored services to support companies in developing sustainable solutions that meet industry needs. Our Bio Manufacturing team operates a unique bioprocess production model that combines both upstream and downstream operations. Together with your team, you will support process development, optimization and scale-up, and product recovery and characterization services. You will work with innovative clients to develop their products at a pilot & Industrial scale level, participating in validating and de-risking their technology to ensure they hit commercial markets in sustainable biomanufacturing. Additionally, you will help to maintain the equipment and utilities to uphold high levels of safety and efficiency within the facility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate utilities including, but not limited to, electric boilers, multi-stage air compressors, RO water systems, and large-scale bioreactors (100L–10,000L).
- Monitor, operate, and maintain process equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of manufacturing activities.
- Oversee and maintain daily operating logs, complete routine inspections, troubleshoot process and equipment issues, and perform maintenance activities such as filter changes and manufacturer-recommended preventative maintenance.
- Maintain accurate equipment maintenance records and ensure the facility's preventative maintenance program remains current and up to date.
- Identify equipment deficiencies, maintenance concerns, and reliability risks, and promptly communicate critical maintenance requirements and upcoming preventative maintenance needs to the Lead Engineer.
- Support the planning and coordination of maintenance activities to minimize operational downtime and maintain equipment readiness.
- Operate and maintain downstream processing equipment, including Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems, centrifuges, spray dryers, filtration equipment, and associated auxiliary systems.
- Assist with equipment installation, connection, commissioning, and startup activities to support pilot and industrial-scale production runs.
- Assist fermentation technicians and other operations personnel as required to support production schedules and client projects.
- Perform Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Steam-in-Place (SIP) operations in accordance with established procedures and manufacturer specifications.
- Carry out cleaning and sanitation activities, including the preparation and circulation of cleaning solutions such as caustic washes, to ensure equipment cleanliness and process integrity.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment while adhering to all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve equipment reliability, process efficiency, safety, and operational performance.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned based on business needs.
Qualifications and Eligibility:
You have an educational background in a relevant field, coupled with a experience in the industry. You are a highly detailed, focused individual with excellent analytical skills. You enjoy solving problems in collaboration with a small team and have the strong communication skills required to do so. Additionally, you possess excellent organizational and time-management skills, with a demonstrated history of meeting deliverables with a sense of urgency.
Your qualifications include:
- A diploma in a relevant field, such as 4th class power engineering, chemical or biochemical or other related engineering technology.
- Knowledgeable in process operations.
- A history of being able to problem-solve and make improvements/optimizations.
- You have a great mechanical aptitude, and you have been able to provide support in maintenance in an industrial or related environment.
- Highly detailed, focused individual that enjoys working on a small team where responsibilities are shared and varied.
