Job Summary
Kai Cao Inc. is seeking a Junior Software Developer for a nine-month contract position to support the development of internal engineering tools, automation software, and AI-enabled applications.
This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career developer looking to gain practical experience building software used in real industrial environments. You'll be working across a mix of internal and client-facing projects — likely several at once — so we're looking for someone who can move between codebases, pick things up quickly, and take real ownership of the work rather than just executing tickets.
This position reports directly to the supervisor, so clear, proactive communication matters as much as the code itself — flagging blockers early, writing things down clearly, and documenting decisions so someone else on the team can follow your work without a long explanation.
Duties
You'll likely be involved in multiple active projects at once, spanning internal tools and client-facing applications, so comfort moving between different codebases and priorities is important.
Responsibilities may include:
- Developing web applications using React
- Developing desktop applications using Python or C#
- Supporting AI and computer vision projects
- Database design and backend development
- Testing, debugging, and validation of software applications
- Preparing technical documentation and user guides
- Assisting with software architecture and system design
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Strong programming ability in Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript
- Familiarity with the software development lifecycle (SDLC), UML diagrams, and technical documentation practices
- Familiarity with Git version control
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, and the ability to learn new technologies quickly
- Good communication and technical writing skills — comfortable raising issues, asking questions, and giving updates without being chased
- Able to take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them to resolution independently, while also working well within a small team
- Be eligible to obtain a Nuclear Security Clearance.
- Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a personal vehicle.
- Be willing and able to work in industrial and nuclear power plant environments.
Assets (Nice to Have)
Experience with any of the following is considered an asset:
- React and TypeScript
- OpenCV, YOLO, or other Machine Learning / AI projects
- PySide6 / PyQt
- SQLite, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or other databases
- REST APIs
- Data visualization and reporting tools
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate enjoys building practical software that solves real-world problems. You should be comfortable working with engineers, gathering requirements, and developing tools that improve productivity, automation, and data management. An interest in industrial applications, automation, or AI is considered an asset — and above all, you should be someone who takes initiative and communicates clearly.
Work Environment
This position is based out of our Oakville office and is expected to be primarily in-person. The successful candidate will work directly with technical staff on active projects and software tools. We believe early-career developers benefit significantly from direct collaboration and hands-on exposure.
Pay: $25.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
- On-site parking
Work Location: In person
