POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a motivated Project Biologist to deliver high-quality environmental consulting and biological services. This role will require field and office work, effective communication with team members and clients, and support for environmental assessments, permitting, and compliance monitoring. Key responsibilities include:
· Delivering environmental consulting and technical biological services.
· Working locally and remotely in the field, as required.
· Communicating effectively and responsibly with your colleagues, Roe’s Project Managers, health and safety staff, coordination staff and administrative staff.
· Communicating effectively and responsibly with Roe’s clients and all those you encounter while representing, in one way or another, Roe.
· Learning and understanding pertinent legislation (federal, provincial and municipal).
· Supporting environmental assessments of various scales, in various sectors.
· Supporting the acquisition of necessary permits/approvals on behalf of Roe’s clients.
· Communicating effectively with regulatory agencies, when requested.
· Implementing environmental/biological survey, monitoring, and management programs.
· Providing, with the support of Roe’s qualified professionals, environmental mitigation advice and monitoring compliance of construction activities.
· Conduct routine environmental monitoring, including erosion and sediment control monitoring (observation, field note recording, photo-documentation, and reporting).
· Being part of Roe’s “Call-out Response” program, providing environmental emergency response during and after working hours.
· Drafting high quality, well considered and formatted, written deliverables.
POSITION TERM
Full-time with 6-month onboarding period. Note that available hours may fluctuate with seasonal demands. It is expected work weeks will require 30 – 40 hours late fall through early spring (November – March) and 40 – 70 hours late spring through early fall (April – October). This position features a flexible, variable schedule with changing days and hours each week, including potential shifts on mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.
POSITION LOCATION
- Office location in North Vancouver, BC with projects primarily in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Sea-to-Sky Corridor, with additional opportunities throughout the South Coast region and Vancouver Island.
- We generally offer a flexible working environment – the need to be in the office or ability to work from a home office is highly dependent on a combination of personal preference, task and administrative requirements, and the preference of your respective project-specific supervisor. Functionality and efficiency are the mutual objectives that we will strive for. You will be provided laptop, with remote access to our server so that you can sometimes work at your preferred location.
REQUIREMENTS
- R.P. Bio, RBTech or other professional designation. Must maintain good standing with all professional designations, meeting ongoing professional development requirements.
- Minimum 3 years experience environmental monitoring in the construction industry.
- Ability to work remotely approximately 14 days per month and be available frequently for after-hours and weekend call-out for environmental response. Please indicate interest in longer stretches of remote or camp work in your application email.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean Driver’s Abstract. Transportation to the office is required to access equipment and fleet vehicles.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a group in both remote and urban settings.
- Strong organizational, time management and communication skills.
- Electrofishing: Theory, Safety and Application Certification
PREFERENCES GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH
- Environmental Monitoring on project compliance on large construction projects.
- Field work experience in aquatic biology (e.g., fish and amphibian surveys/salvages and habitat assessment), terrestrial wildlife and birds (e.g., breeding bird nest surveys, raptor surveys, wildlife and species at risk surveys) and vegetation assessment.
- Experience in report writing, development permit applications, provincial and federal permits applications and CEMP/EIA report writing.
- Technically proficient in desktop research methods, word processing and mapping. Strong technical report writing would be an asset.
- Suitable academic background and/or experience with applied biology work or other related field work.
- Erosion and sediment control courses.
- Level 1 First Aid
- Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and be flexible with scheduling.
- Strong interpersonal skills for client and contractor communications.
COMPENSATION
Competitive hourly wage based on experience and education and courses: $75,000 - $95,000. Overtime per provincial standards.
