Role Overview
We are seeking a motivated Project Controller to join our team in a full-time, two-year term position (with possibility of extension) based in Saskatoon, SK or Kelowna, BC. The anticipated start date is November, 2026. This is a hybrid role with an expectation of three days per week in the office. As a key member of our project delivery and finance team, you will work closely with Project Managers, Finance, Engineers, and Operations to ensure accurate tracking, forecasting, and reporting of project performance.
This role is ideal for an intermediate professional with a strong foundation in project controls, cost management, or financial analysis who is comfortable working across project delivery, finance, and operations. The position will support projects and operational activities across Extropic Energy and Aurora Renewables, as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Support end-to-end project control activities, including project setup, planning, budgeting, scheduling, cost tracking, forecasting, and performance reporting.
- Monitor project budgets, commitments, actual costs, forecasts, cash flow, margins, work in progress (WIP), and schedule performance; proactively identify variances and coordinate corrective actions with Project Managers and leadership.
- Collaborate with Project Managers and Engineers to maintain project schedules, track milestones, update forecasts, and prepare dashboards and reports for internal stakeholders and senior leadership.
- Support project purchasing and procurement activities, including preparation and tracking of purchase orders, vendor documentation, commitments, and invoice reconciliation.
- Coordinate with Finance and Project Managers on vendor invoices, payment status, cost coding, and resolution of invoice discrepancies.
- Assist with the preparation and submission of project invoices, manage billing cycles and expenditure tracking, and support accounts receivable activities, including monitoring outstanding invoices and coordinating client follow-up on overdue payments.
- Contribute to financial month-end and year-end processes, including accruals, reconciliations, and reporting for active projects.
- Support government funding and grant administration, including expenditure tracking, financial claims, forecasts, supporting documentation, and reporting requirements.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives related to project controls and reporting workflows.
- Assist with audit preparation and respond to internal and external audit requests as needed.
- Administrative tasks associated with accounting and project controls.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- 1-3 years of experience in project controls, project accounting, cost engineering, or financial/project analysis, ideally in a project-based or energy/infrastructure environment;
- Experience supporting government- or grant-funded projects is an asset.
- CPA designation (or in progress) is an asset.
- Familiarity with project scheduling tools (e.g., MS Project), ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Dynamics), reporting tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI), QuickBooks Online, Dext, ApprovalMax, timekeeping/project management systems is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of basic AI productivity tools is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
- Solid understanding of project control principles, including earned value management, cash flow forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proactive and self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
