BeefSmart, a leading independent animal nutrition and production management consulting company, requires an experienced Ruminant Beef Nutritionist to support growing demand for its cow/calf consulting services in Saskatchewan, Canada.
BeefSmart has recently merged its business with the beef consulting arm of Gowans Feed Consulting and is hiring for an exciting growing business. Combined, these businesses have served animal producers since 1990, focused on maximizing clients’ net returns by providing industry leading expertise in the fields of nutrition, production management support, input cost reduction and research. This is a home office-based position located in Saskatchewan requiring regular travel to client operations in the area as well as some travel within Canada.
Job Description:
Summary:
· Provide nutrition and production management services to clients with a focus on optimizing production performance, efficiency and ultimately the profitability of the producer.
· Expand BeefSmart’s nutrition, production and management services business.
· Providing measurable improvements on client cow/calf and feedlot performance and profits.
Key Functions:
· Develop strong relationships and build long-term nutrition plans for customers. Design best value feeding programs based on available ingredients, management targets, and feeding equipment. Provide nutritional and economic assessment of available commodities.
· Developing custom supplement and mineral blends to optimize animal growth, reproductive performance and productivity.
· Setup, review, and audit implementation of feeding programs and improvement strategies in ranches, feedlots and backgrounding operations.
· Regular farm visits to clients to consult with ranch managers on all areas of production.
· Work with clients to develop forage/feeding inventory strategies.
· Work with team and clients to interpret feed, water, and liver biopsy tests to provide mineral and feeding recommendations.
· Reviewing client production data and identify opportunities to increase profits through management practice changes to improve productivity or reduce input costs.
· Developing, demonstrating and leading improvement strategies for client ranches and feedlots.
· Client staff training on essential production and leadership skills.
· Trouble shooting production challenges at client feedlots and ranches.
· Review current research and implement new technologies on ranches and feedlots.
Abilities Required:
· Operate independently to manage client relationships and provide required services.
· Strong communication skills to apply knowledge and new technology at the customer level.
· Effective time management and organization skills.
· Consultative selling approach to demonstrate value of BeefSmart services and secure new services contracts.
Qualifications:
· MSc or PhD in Animal Science candidates are preferred. Work experience specializing in ruminant nutrition, ranch and feedlot management is an asset.
· The ideal candidate should have a minimum 2 years in-the-field experience working with modern ranch and feedlot operations.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
· Proficiency in ration balancing software (et. NDS Professional) would be an asset.
· Knowledge of feedlot management software (e.g. Fusion, ITS, PLA, etc.) considered an asset.
