- Position Type: Temporary Full-Time Contract
- Hours: 35 hours per week
- Wage: $24.00-$26.00 per hour
- Contract Term: Until March 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and organizational needs.
- Schedule: Primarily Monday to Friday; however, occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support school/community events, workshops, outreach activities, and partnership initiatives.
About the Position
Vernon Immigrant Services (VIS) is seeking an enthusiastic and community-minded Anti-Racism Outreach Worker to support the implementation of our Anti-Racism Action Plan. This position plays an important role in building a more inclusive, equitable, and welcoming community by promoting awareness, resilience, empowerment, and local capacity-building initiatives.
Reporting to both the SWIS Coordinator and the Community Connections Coordinator, the Anti-Racism Outreach Worker works collaboratively with VIS teams and community partners to address barriers to inclusion, support individuals impacted by racism and discrimination, and strengthen advocacy for equity-deserving individuals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work with the Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) team to support newcomers, especially vulnerable children and youth, through educational, awareness-building, and anti-racism initiatives.
- Work with the Community Connections team to help newcomers build strong support networks, increase familiarity with local services, and participate fully in community life; and help newcomer youth build strong connections between school, community partners, and VIS.
- Support VIS’s anti-racism strategy of supporting newcomer youth in all aspects of thriving, including settlement, education, employment, health and mental health, mentorship and leadership development, and meaningful participation in the local community.
- Collaborate with the Employment team to support youth employment initiatives and engagement with hard-to-reach populations.
- Strengthen community connections and partnerships that help reduce barriers to integration and create a more just, equitable, and inclusive community.
- Support the delivery of anti-racism, anti-hate, diversity, resilience-building, and community capacity-building initiatives.
- Develop and facilitate workshops, activities, and resources that help individuals and groups build resilience and respond to discrimination, stress, and adversity.
- Support individuals experiencing racism or discrimination by providing information, referrals, and connections to appropriate community resources.
- Build and maintain partnerships with local agencies and organizations to strengthen community responses to racism and discrimination.
- Promote access to mental health and counselling supports for individuals affected by racism.
- Identify community needs, opportunities, and partnerships that advance anti-racism efforts.
- Assist with community outreach, event planning, reporting, and other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, Human Services, Community Development, Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working with newcomers, children, youth, diverse communities, and/or vulnerable populations.
- Fluency in a language other than English.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Knowledge of anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles is preferred.
- Experience developing and delivering workshops, presentations, or community programs is an asset.
- Knowledge of local community resources and services is an asset.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence and access to reliable transportation are preferred.
