We support individuals who are either diagnosed or suspected to have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The Justice Program Support Worker assists clients in various ways including legal advocacy, courtroom support, probation and parole planning, release planning, access to disability, cultural, and community and referral to Gladue Team for Gladue Reports and Comprehensive Release Plans. The worker takes direction from the client and operates within a trauma-informed and harm-reduction practice to support clients who are in custody, in court, and/or in the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
(MUST maintain an FASD Informed, Trauma Informed, Harm Reduction Informed and Client Lead Approach)
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to
Advocating for the individual where appropriate, ensuring the individual understands the legal process at the stage they’re at as well as potential future outcomes.
Make referrals to service providers (i.e.: occupational therapists, counselors, addictions groups, etc.) Support workers will have the ability to provide information on FASD to these groups to meet the needs of the client and the community itself
Assist families in accessing the assessment and diagnostic services available. Work with families to understand assessment documents and support them through the process.
Engaging with regional community professionals to educate them about the FASD and the Network.
Creating partnerships with professionals working to provide guidance and strategies that are FASD-specific
Develops and maintains network of referral and community connections, related to the justice system and community agencies.
Attending meetings, legal appointments, and conversations with police with individuals to ensure the individual fully understands what they are communicating about.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of the Justice System
An understanding of the justice system, this includes: the processes, procedures, and a basic understanding of the law is crucial.
Experience
Any previous experience working within the criminal justice system or related positions are considered an asset.
Experience working with people with cognitive impairments is an asset.
Communication Skills
This job will require you to have excellent written and verbal communication.
This position requires a lot of communication not only with clients, but also among supervisors, other staff members, and justice professionals.
It is crucial that information is communicated and accessible for everyone involved.
Empathy
In this position you will interact with individuals with various backgrounds and may encounter difficult situations. It is imperative that you demonstrate empathy to ensure individuals are treated with respect and dignity.
Organizational Skills
Organization and attention to detail in this field is crucial, you will need to be able to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks, while ensuring deadlines are still met.
Certificates
Any certificate with respect to the justice system, working with vulnerable individuals, and case management is considered an asset.
Other
Knowledge of FASD, its effects, and strategies in behavior management is desired.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of required documentation.
