Cascadia Scientific is a fast-growing scale-up with approximately 50 employees and a global customer base. This is a contract position with the potential to become a longer-term engagement, making it an excellent opportunity for a Senior Data Scientist who enjoys working on meaningful, real-world problems and wants the opportunity to make a direct impact.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently and at a high level in a fast-paced scale-up environment, taking ownership of projects and delivering results with limited oversight. This role requires someone who can thrive in a collaborative but lean environment, where initiative, adaptability, and strong problem-solving skills are highly valued.
Job Overview
We’re looking for a Senior Data Scientist to build advanced analytics, machine learning, and data-driven solutions for mining and heavy-equipment applications. The role blends data science with real engineering and operational understanding: you’ll work with large volumes of equipment telemetry — sensor, GPS, fuel, and operational data — to develop algorithms that improve equipment productivity, fuel efficiency, operator performance, and mining operations.
This is a role for someone who moves beyond traditional data analysis: understanding the physical system behind the data, investigating sensor and data-quality issues, developing analytical methodologies, building production-ready algorithms, and translating results into practical recommendations for mining operations. We’re especially interested in candidates with a Mining, Mechanical, Physics, or other quantitative engineering background, and give preference to those with direct experience in mining or heavy mobile equipment
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, validate, and deploy machine-learning, statistical, and physics-informed models for mining and heavy-equipment applications.
- Analyze large-scale telemetry — CAN bus, GPS/GNSS, fuel-flow meters, engine and equipment sensors, and vehicle dynamics — including spatial and geospatial ML on GPS trajectories to evaluate haul roads, operating conditions, equipment performance, and fuel efficiency.
- Build methodologies to detect and characterize operational events (equipment states, refueling, abnormal sensor behavior, changing conditions) and to identify haul-road segments, operational hotspots, and areas of abnormal fuel consumption.
- Apply supervised and unsupervised techniques — regression, clustering, nearest-neighbor methods, anomaly detection, feature engineering, and statistical modeling.
- Investigate complex data-quality problems (sensor failures, calibration errors, timestamp inconsistencies, missing data, telemetry gaps) and build robust preprocessing and validation methods that hold up under real-world conditions.
- Design and maintain production-ready Python pipelines for processing large telemetry volumes, working with SQL/Postgres, APIs, and cloud infrastructure.
- Partner with software developers to move analytical prototypes into production systems and live, customer-facing applications.
- Work with operations, engineering, product, customer success, and field-service teams to turn operational problems into analytical solutions — and communicate directly with customers to validate methods and support deployment.
- Translate complex results into clear conclusions, visualizations, and actionable recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders, and help shape new analytical products where data science can create measurable value.
Skills:
- Advanced Python for data science (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, SciPy).
- Strong SQL and experience with large relational datasets.
- Solid grounding in statistics, regression, and machine learning.
- Experience analyzing sensor data, with a strong grasp of the relationship between physical systems and measured data.
- Strong data visualization skills (Plotly, Matplotlib, or similar).
- Experience writing analytical code beyond notebooks, with attention to testing, maintainability, scalability, and production deployment.
- Ability to independently turn ambiguous operational problems into structured analytical approaches.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in a relevant quantitative field (see above).
- 5+ years of relevant experience in data science, engineering/industrial analytics, or mining technology (exceptional candidates with ~4 years and directly relevant telemetry experience will be considered).
- A demonstrated record of solving complex, real-world problems with data.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design analytical methodologies rather than relying solely on established approaches.
- Strong written and verbal communication across engineering, mining, software, and business audiences.
Mining Experience — a Strong Asset
Experience in one or more of the following is particularly valuable: open-pit mining, haul-truck operations, mine haul roads, equipment telemetry, heavy mobile equipment, fuel management and efficiency, operator performance, mine dispatch systems, GPS/GNSS equipment tracking, or equipment instrumentation and sensors. You don’t need all of these — but you should be able to understand mining operations and connect equipment behavior to the data those systems generate.
Nice to Have:
- Direct experience at a mine site or with mining companies.
- Understanding of haul-truck mechanical systems and combustion engines.
- Fuel systems, fuel-flow measurement, or energy-efficiency analysis.
- Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Hitachi, or similar mining equipment.
- Experience developing customer-facing analytics products.
- Portuguese or Spanish language skills in addition to English.
