The Opportunity
We are currently recruiting a Senior Manager, Audit & Assurance to join our growing team.
The Senior Manager will be a key member of HDCPA’s leadership team and will have responsibility for overseeing a portfolio of audit and assurance engagements, while also providing senior-level oversight on selected accounting, compilation, corporate tax, and advisory engagements.
While assurance will represent the primary focus of the role, the successful candidate will work across different areas of the firm’s practice and will be expected to understand the broader accounting and tax considerations affecting our clients.
The Senior Manager will also be responsible for developing and mentoring professional staff, managing senior-level client relationships, maintaining high standards of quality and professional practice, and supporting the continued growth of the firm.
This role is intended for an experienced public accounting professional who can operate with a high degree of independence, exercise strong professional judgment, and provide leadership on technically complex engagements.
The successful candidate will work closely with the firm’s Partners and will be expected to take ownership of engagements from planning through completion, act as a senior technical resource for the team, contribute to the firm’s quality management processes, and participate in business development and strategic initiatives.
We are looking for a Canadian CPA with significant public accounting experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and is interested in taking on increasing leadership responsibility within a growing firm.
Responsibilities
Engagement & Portfolio Leadership
- Oversee a portfolio of audit, review, agreed-upon procedures, compilation, accounting, corporate tax, and other assurance and advisory engagements.
- Lead complex audit and assurance engagements involving Canadian reporting issuers, private companies, and clients in specialized industries, including technology, digital assets and crypto, sustainability reporting, and asset-based lending.
- Take overall responsibility for engagement planning, risk assessment, execution, completion, and reporting.
- Provide senior-level oversight on compilation engagements, year-end accounting work, corporate tax returns, and related client matters.
- Review complex accounting, auditing, financial reporting, tax, and disclosure matters and ensure issues are appropriately identified, researched, documented, and resolved.
- Oversee engagement budgets, timelines, staffing requirements, utilization, and engagement economics.
- Coordinate multiple concurrent engagements and ensure appropriate resources are assigned to meet client, tax, regulatory, and reporting deadlines.
- Review engagement files, working papers, reports, financial statements, corporate tax returns, technical memoranda, and other deliverables before Partner review.
- Identify significant engagement risks and accounting, auditing, or tax matters and communicate them to the engagement Partner on a timely basis.
- Ensure engagements are performed in accordance with applicable professional standards, regulatory requirements, tax legislation, firm policies, and the firm’s system of quality management.
Technical Leadership – Assurance, Accounting & Tax
- Serve as a senior technical resource to engagement teams on complex accounting, auditing, assurance, financial reporting, and selected corporate tax matters.
- Lead and review engagements performed under IFRS, ASPE, US GAAP, CAS, US GAAS, and PCAOB standards, as applicable.
- Review financial statements and related accounting entries for compliance with applicable accounting frameworks.
- Review Canadian corporate income tax returns and related schedules and identify significant tax issues requiring further research or Partner involvement.
- Provide guidance to team members on common corporate tax matters, including tax provisions, capital asset transactions, shareholder matters, loss utilization, and other issues arising in the course of client engagements.
- Research complex technical matters and prepare or review accounting, assurance, and tax memoranda supporting significant professional judgments and conclusions.
- Assist Partners with consultations involving complex or unusual accounting, auditing, assurance, and tax matters.
- Maintain a strong understanding of developments in accounting, auditing, taxation, securities regulation, and professional standards and communicate relevant changes to the team.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the firm’s audit, accounting, and tax methodologies, templates, tools, policies, and quality management processes.
- Participate in internal and external file inspections, quality reviews, and regulatory inspection processes, where applicable.
- Promote a strong culture of quality, professional skepticism, sound documentation, and compliance throughout the firm.
Client Relationship Management
- Act as a senior point of contact for clients and develop trusted relationships with management, finance teams, audit committees, business owners, and other stakeholders.
- Lead discussions with clients regarding significant accounting, auditing, financial reporting, tax, internal control, and regulatory matters.
- Develop an understanding of clients’ businesses beyond the immediate engagement and identify accounting, tax, compliance, and business issues that may require attention.
- Provide practical, solutions-oriented advice while maintaining appropriate professional independence and objectivity.
- Manage client expectations regarding engagement scope, timing, deliverables, fees, and emerging issues.
- Participate in meetings with Boards of Directors, Audit Committees, lenders, legal counsel, tax advisors, and other professional advisors and stakeholders where appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to provide additional assurance, accounting, tax, compliance, and advisory services to existing clients.
People Leadership & Development
- Lead, coach, and develop Managers, Senior Associates, Associates, and other professional staff across assurance, accounting, and tax engagements.
- Provide meaningful real-time feedback and formal performance evaluations to team members.
- Support the development of technical, project management, communication, and leadership skills across the team.
- Help team members develop broader public accounting capabilities, including exposure to assurance, financial reporting, accounting, and corporate tax matters.
- Delegate effectively and ensure team members are assigned responsibilities appropriate to their experience and professional development goals.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and retention of professional staff.
- Participate in the development and delivery of internal technical and professional training.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance culture.
- Support CPA students and team members progressing through the firm’s CPA Ontario pre-approved assurance program.
Firm Growth & Business Development
- Work closely with the Partners to support the continued growth and development of HDCPA’s assurance, accounting, tax, and advisory practices.
- Participate in prospective client meetings, proposal preparation, scoping discussions, fee quotations, and other business development activities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, referral sources, other accounting firms, legal professionals, tax professionals, and industry contacts.
- Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and introduce additional firm services.
- Contribute to the development of new service offerings, particularly in specialized areas such as digital assets, emerging technologies, sustainability reporting, compliance reviews, regulatory assurance, and other evolving markets.
- Participate in firm-wide strategic initiatives, operational improvements, and technology adoption.
- Assist in developing the next generation of Managers and future leaders of the firm.
Qualifications
Mandatory
- Canadian CPA designation.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in a Canadian public accounting firm, including significant audit and assurance experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex audit and assurance engagements from planning through completion.
- Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, ASPE, CAS, and Canadian financial reporting and assurance requirements.
- Demonstrated experience working with Canadian reporting issuers and/or other complex assurance clients.
- Practical experience with compilation engagements, financial statement preparation, and Canadian corporate income tax compliance.
- Ability to review Canadian corporate income tax returns and identify accounting and tax issues requiring further investigation or escalation.
- Significant experience reviewing engagement files, assurance reports, financial statements, accounting memoranda, audit documentation, and other client deliverables.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, and developing professional staff.
- Strong understanding of engagement risk management, project management, budgeting, staffing, and engagement economics.
- Ability to independently research complex accounting, auditing, and related tax matters and clearly document professional judgments and conclusions.

Preferred
- Experience with PCAOB audits and US GAAS.
- Strong technical understanding of US GAAP.
- Experience working with clients in technology, digital assets and crypto, financial services, or other emerging industries.
- Experience with other assurance engagements, including sustainability reporting and asset-based lending engagements.
- Strong Canadian corporate tax knowledge, including experience reviewing T2 corporate income tax returns and related tax planning matters.
- Experience dealing with Audit Committees, Boards of Directors, securities counsel, tax advisors, and other external professionals.
- Experience participating in internal or external quality inspections.
- Experience with business development, proposals, and client acquisition.
- Lead the evaluation, implementation, and adoption of AI-enabled tools across the firm to improve audit quality, efficiency, knowledge management, and client service, including developing practical workflows and supporting staff training and change management.
- Help establish and maintain appropriate governance over the use of AI tools, including policies and controls related to confidentiality, data security, human review, documentation, professional judgment, and compliance with applicable professional and regulatory requirements.

Pay: $130,000.00-$150,000.00 per year
