JOB OPENING: Welder-Fitter
This position is a unionized position and covered under the collective agreement between Trecan and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Local 56 (the “Union”). Preference will be given to qualified internal applicants. The successful applicant will be required to become, or remain, a member in good standing with the Union.
Trecan Combustion Limited has an immediate opening for a full-time, permanent Welder-Fitter to join our team. We are a Monday to Friday operation, with shifts running from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
The Welder-Fitter is responsible for performing welding and fitting operations related to the fabrication and assembly of snowmelters and associated equipment. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, detail-oriented, capable of working independently, and committed to producing high-quality workmanship in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
This position reports to the General Shop Foreman and Shop Foreman.
Job Tasks
- Ensure all welding and fitting activities are carried out in accordance with company policies, regulatory laws, and safety procedures.
- Operate manual and semi-automatic welding equipment and flame cutting equipment.
- Perform FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding) and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding).
- Prepare jigs and setups for welding operations.
- Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and sub-assemblies prior to assembly.
- Operate oxygen arc cutting equipment (plasma cutter).
- Operate grinders and other hand tools safely and effectively.
- Use effective welding and grinding techniques to produce smooth welds with minimal distortion, undercut, porosity, and lack of fusion.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, welding diagrams, work orders, and work instructions.
- Review Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and work orders, follow all instructions, and complete required sign-offs upon completion of work.
- Accurately record labour time in the company’s labour tracking system.
- Assist with annual inventory counts when required.
- Report damaged equipment, faulty equipment, or safety hazards to the Shop Foreman, Maintenance, or Management.
- Attend weekly toolbox meetings and required training sessions.
- Perform additional duties such as general cleanup, forklift assistance, and shop support as assigned by the Shop Foreman or Management.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of experience in the welding trade.
- Ability to pass an internal welding test administered by Trecan’s Welding Supervisor/Quality Manager.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, welding diagrams, work instructions, and work orders.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Willingness to ask questions and fully understand requirements before beginning work.
- Ability to ensure timely execution of tasks and completion of assigned jobs.
- Ability to safely operate required equipment and tools.
- Comply with all company safety policies and procedures.
- Working safely is a condition of employment. There is zero tolerance for impairment while on duty.

- CSA-approved steel toe boots
- Safety glasses and face shields
- Welding helmet
- Gloves
- Respirators
- Hearing protection
- Hard hat and other required PPE
Certifications & Qualifications
- CWB 4 Position, S Classification FCAW Ticket
- CWB 4 Position, T & FW Classification GMAW Tickets
- Ability to maintain up-to-date certifications and training required by Trecan throughout employment.
Working Conditions
- Work in environments with loud noise levels requiring hearing protection.
- Exposure to welding fumes, airborne particles, and industrial manufacturing conditions requiring respirator use.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching, sitting, and standing.
- Must be able to climb into, over, and under snowmelters and safely use ladders and scaffolds.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
