Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Purchasing Agent to manage procurement activities for a multi-site building products manufacturer. This role is responsible for sourcing and purchasing materials, supplies, equipment, and services while ensuring production teams have the inventory required to meet customer demand.
The Purchasing Agent will manage supplier relationships, support inventory optimization, and help ensure high-quality materials are delivered on time and at competitive prices. This position works closely with production, sales, accounting, engineering, and warehouse teams to support efficient material planning and supply chain operations.
Core Responsibilities
- Source and evaluate new and existing suppliers for materials, equipment, supplies, and services
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and conditions with suppliers
- Manage the purchasing process from purchase order creation through delivery and receipt
- Develop and maintain vendor scorecards to evaluate supplier performance
- Maintain and execute material plans aligned with the master production schedule and customer demand
- Optimize inventory levels and inventory investment throughout the supply chain
- Prepare regular inventory and purchasing reports
- Support inventory accuracy through cycle counts, audits, and physical inventory counts in collaboration with accounting
- Coordinate intercompany material transfers between warehouse locations
- Work closely with production and sales teams to ensure effective material planning and communication
- Collaborate with engineering to source materials and equipment for new projects
- Provide responsive service to internal stakeholders by identifying solutions and alternative supply options
- Develop, implement, and maintain purchasing policies, procedures, and work instructions related to procurement and contract management
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented purchasing professional with experience in a manufacturing environment. They are highly organized, analytical, and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
Strong Excel skills and a solid understanding of bills of materials are essential. The successful candidate will also be a collaborative team player with strong problem-solving abilities and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma and/or degree
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment
- Experience with ERP systems and MRP tools
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Solid understanding of bills of materials (BOMs)
- SCMP, C.P.P., or CPIM certification is considered an asset
- Experience with Microsoft Dynamics and/or Business Central is considered an asset
- Experience in the metals and/or building materials industry is considered an asset
