JOB SUMMARY

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy, inclusive and vibrant City, as well as ensuring that communities, residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places, programs, events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer, and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration, ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities.

Under the guidance of a supervisor, you are responsible for assisting with all functions related to the delivery of summer camp programs to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience for special needs children/youth registered at the camp. You provide direct client care and intervention, and program adaptation. The programs may take place indoors, outdoors, or in a variety of locations. Work is performed in accordance with related legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Note: minimum age of 16 years is required for this Summer Student job.

Post-secondary Student - completion of first year college or university in Nursing, Developmental Services Worker, Recreation and Leisure, or related field

Note: Student must be returning to school in the fall

Minimum of 8 months but less than 1 year of related experience is required

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certificates

AODA Accessibility/IASR Training

Crisis Prevention/Intervention training certificate

Alternative Communication Systems (ASL- American Sign Language) training is desirable

Ergonomic Lifts and Transfers training is an asset

KNOWLEDGE

Children/Youth with special needs
Understanding the development and recreational needs of children.
Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance.
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Programming skills in crafts, sports, games, creative play, stories and music
Experience working with children and/or youth with special needs
Ability to operate any required tools/equipment
Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
Ability to accompany and supervise participants in a variety of environments including aquatic
Lift and transfers procedures (as instructed and trained) to avoid participant or self injury
Ability to promote teamwork and to work independently when appropriate
Maintain a fun and safe environment
Excellent interpersonal, communication, leadership and programming planning skills
Interest or experience working with people with disabilities

Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Note: Under the age of 18, requires a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters (Level 2) check in place of the Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3).
