Doug Coleman Trucking is looking for an experienced transportation professional to join our team as a Driver Trainer.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced AZ driver who knows the industry, takes pride in doing things safely and professionally, and enjoys helping other drivers succeed.
You don't necessarily need to have been a full-time Driver Trainer before. We're looking for someone with strong commercial driving experience, solid knowledge of transportation regulations and safe driving practices, and the ability to coach and communicate effectively with both new and experienced drivers.
This is a hands-on role that combines driver training, road evaluations, coaching, safety and compliance, and driver onboarding.
What You'll Do
- Conduct new-driver orientations and help new drivers and owner-operators successfully transition into the company.
- Conduct pre-employment road tests and driver evaluations.
- Provide in-cab training and coaching to new and existing drivers.
- Conduct post-collision, post-incident and remedial driver evaluations when required.
- Train and coach drivers on:
- Hours of Service (HOS) and ELD use
- Vehicle inspections and defect reporting
- Cargo and load securement
- Weights and dimensions
- Defensive driving
- Backing, coupling and uncoupling
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
- WHMIS
- Accident and incident reporting
- Company safety policies and procedures
- Identify areas where drivers may require additional coaching or retraining.
- Work with drivers to improve safe driving habits and overall performance.
- Assist the Safety & Compliance Manager with collision and incident investigations.
- Review safety trends and help develop training to address recurring issues.
- Maintain accurate driver training, evaluation and certification records.
- Help keep driver training materials and programs current and effective.
- Work closely with Safety, Operations and Fleet/Maintenance to support drivers and resolve concerns.
- Promote a positive safety culture and professional working relationship with our drivers.
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 5 years of trucking/transportation industry experience.
- Minimum 3 years of professional on-road commercial driving experience.
- Valid Ontario AZ driver's licence with an acceptable driving record.
- Strong knowledge of Hours of Service, vehicle inspections, load securement and commercial vehicle regulations.
- Good understanding of Ontario and Canadian transportation regulations.
- Previous experience training, mentoring or coaching drivers is an asset, but not required.
- TDG, WHMIS and defensive-driving instructor certifications are assets; we are willing to work with the right candidate to obtain required certifications.
- Comfortable using ELDs, transportation technology and basic Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Patient, professional and comfortable providing constructive feedback.
- Organized, dependable and able to work independently.
- Some weekend work is required
The Person We're Looking For
You may be a great fit for this role if you're the experienced driver that other drivers already come to for advice.
You understand that good driver training isn't just about knowing the regulations. It's about being able to explain whysomething matters, demonstrate the right way to do it, recognize when someone needs additional help, and coach them respectfully.
We're looking for someone who can earn the respect of our drivers through experience, knowledge, fairness and professionalism.
