About Chess for Life @ U of L
Chess for Life @ U of L is a community-focused initiative that uses chess as a tool to promote critical thinking, problem-solving, focus, confidence, and social connection. Over the last ten years, the program has expanded to work with children, youth, adults, and community organizations. Our programs focus on providing accessible and engaging chess content while meeting participants where they are at. Our diverse programs include working with youth involved in the justice system, youth in schools, incarcerated adults, seniors and more. Chess for Life also has a research component that is investigating the cognitive and psychosocial benefits of chess.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, community-minded Program Coordinator to support the day-to-day operations of Chess for Life in Lethbridge and help drive forward the program's continued growth and impact.
Position Overview
The Program Coordinator will serve as a key representative in the Chess for Life @ U of L team, overseeing program delivery, community partnerships, participant engagement, and organizational growth. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with a variety of people, is passionate about community engagement, and wants to make a meaningful difference through mentorship and outreach.
The position is currently 20 hours per week, with the potential for increased hours as the program expands.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver chess programming for children, youth, adults, and community groups.
- Build and maintain relationships with schools, community agencies, nonprofits, and other partners.
- Support the expansion of Chess for Life programming throughout Lethbridge and surrounding communities.
- Develop educational resources, lesson plans, promotional materials, and program content.
- Assist with research activities, where requested and directed by the Research Coordinator.
- Maintain and update the Chess for Life website and online presence.
- Respond to participant, parent, partner, and community inquiries.
- Assist with event planning, tournaments, workshops, and outreach initiatives.
- Track program activities and participant attendance, and prepare reports as required.
- Represent Chess for Life at meetings, community events, and stakeholder engagements.
- Perform other tasks and administrative duties as requested.
Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrated experience in education, youth development, community engagement, or related fields.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Capable with a variety of software including Office 365
- Understanding of basic web design (Squarespace, Wix etc.).
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a diverse team of partners and stakeholders.
- Working knowledge of chess and an understanding of the game's rules and fundamentals.
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
- Ability to travel within and around the Lethbridge region.
Preferred:
- Background in education, recreation, youth work, social services, psychology, community development, or a related field.
- Competent chess proficiency or experience teaching chess.
- Experience with website management, communications, or program coordination.
- Experience working with research projects or nonprofit organizations.
