As we continue to grow, we are seeking a Mechanical Estimator / Project Coordinator to join our team and help deliver successful projects from bid through completion.
Position Summary
The Mechanical Estimator / Project Coordinator is responsible for preparing accurate project estimates, developing competitive bids, coordinating awarded projects, and supporting project execution. This role bridges estimating, operations, fabrication, procurement, and client communication to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical fabrication, welding, piping, structural steel, and industrial construction processes. Estimating responsibilities typically include analyzing drawings and specifications, performing material and labour takeoffs, obtaining vendor pricing, and preparing bid submissions. Project coordination duties often include scheduling, procurement, change management, cost tracking, and client communication.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating
- Review RFQs, drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
- Prepare detailed material, labour, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for fabrication, piping, structural steel, and mechanical projects.
- Solicit and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Prepare bid packages, proposals, and scope summaries.
- Identify project risks, exclusions, and opportunities.
- Maintain estimating databases and historical cost information.
- Participate in bid review meetings and client discussions.
Project Coordination
- Assist with project startup, planning, and scheduling.
- Coordinate procurement of materials and equipment.
- Track project budgets, labour hours, and production progress.
- Manage RFIs, change orders, and project documentation.
- Coordinate communication between clients, vendors, field crews, and fabrication teams.
- Support project managers in maintaining schedules and project deliverables.
- Attend project meetings and provide status updates.
- Ensure project documentation is complete and accurately maintained.
General
- Promote and support Altaweld's safety culture.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with business development opportunities and customer follow-up.
Qualifications
- 3–10+ years of estimating, project coordination, project management, fabrication, or industrial construction experience.
- Commercial Plumbing / Gas fitting
- Experience in welding, piping, fabrication, pressure equipment, mechanical construction, or structural steel preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, fabrication drawings, and specifications.
- Strong understanding of material procurement and construction methods.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).
- Fast Pipe Estimating Program
- Experience with estimating, ERP, or project management software is an asset.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
Preferred Background
- Journeyperson Welder, Pipefitter, Steamfitter, Plumber / Gasfitter, or related trade.
- Engineering Technology diploma or Mechanical Engineering background.
- Experience estimating industrial fabrication and maintenance projects.
- Knowledge of Alberta industrial and energy-sector projects.

Pay: $70,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
