Job Description

Unit Description

Established in 2000, the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) is a national research infrastructure for leading edge research and training in the quantitative social and population health sciences, creating social, economic, health and environmental benefits for Canadians. The Network supports a partnership between Canadian universities and Statistics Canada. Its mission is to enable quantitative researchers to address vital questions; train the next generation of highly qualified personnel in social and population health sciences; and contribute to evidence-based policy and decision-making by facilitating access to confidential microdata supported by state-of-the-art computing facilities. There are four key strategic pillars set out in the current CRDCN Strategic Plan (2024-29): data; community and capabilities; evidence-informed decision-making; and research ecosystem.

This national facility is run by a central management team based at McMaster University as the host institution. It is led by the Executive Director who reports to a national Board and at McMaster to the Vice President Research, who also serves on the Board. CRDCN is a distributed network, currently comprising 33 physical Research Data Centres (RDCs) based in Collaborating Institutions, each led by an Academic Director, whose roles and responsibilities are overseen by CRDCN. The CRDCN currently serves over 2,000 researchers and trainees in all 10 provinces.

CRDCN is primarily funded by federal and provincial government agencies—namely Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ)—as well as Statistics Canada and 33 Collaborating Institutions. The total budget from these and other funding sources in the current funding term is $80M (2023-2029). CRDCN is one of only 19 CFI Major Science Initiatives. CRDCN also manages additional CFI funding ($10M) to build an advanced research computing platform, which will centralize physical and remote data access to all RDCs via two Compute Canada data centres located at the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University. CRDCN’s central management team will take on new responsibilities to operate and maintain this advanced research computing platform upon completion of its build.

Reporting to the Director of Research, Training, and Knowledge Mobilization, the key focus of this role is listed under ‘Additional Information’ below, and candidates should consider how their experience can be translated to the listed ‘Assets’.

Job Summary

Responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing a large, multi-site, multi-disciplinary research program, with the potential to compose, lead, and conduct research as an independent investigator or as a co-investigator within a faculty member's program. Develops collaborations and partnerships with research user groups to help shape research directions and ensure effective research transfer.

Purpose and Key Functions

Initiate, design, and lead a research program.

Formulate research questions and generate and test hypotheses.

Make significant contributions to the design of a research program to answer questions and solve complex research problems.

Publish results as first author in scientific peer-reviewed journals.

Author scientific papers, funding proposals, and abstracts.

Write research proposals, submit proposals to external funding agencies, and secure funding to conduct research through grants and contracts.

Plan and coordinate all aspects of a major research program across multiple sites.

Develop inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional, and inter-sectoral research collaborations.

Negotiate research agreements and subcontracts to meet site and coordinating centre requirements.

Develop budget for a research program.

Implement and maintain a research program budget. Create financial projections and make adjustments to a research program budget throughout the fiscal year.

Troubleshoot problems at all stages of program development and implementation and modify protocol or program procedures to address challenges.

Participate with a team in the development and authoring of research protocols.

Design a promotional strategy and related materials to encourage participation and support for a research program.

Conduct quantitative and qualitative program participant interviews.

Facilitate focus group sessions with program participants.

Coordinate and manage the collection, delivery, entry, verification, analysis, and reporting of data.

Oversee the design of data management systems.

Apply specialized knowledge and scientific principles to review, critically appraise and interpret published literature.

Develop estimates of time and resources for a research program.

Use statistical software to analyze complex data and interpret results.

Liaise between the program centre and remote program sites and personnel

Develop presentations and present at meetings, seminars, and conferences

Conduct literature searches

Supervision

Provide lead hand supervision and is responsible for the quality and quantity of work of others

Ongoing responsibility for supervising up to 9 casual employees at any one time

Requirements

Doctoral degree in a relevant field of study

Requires 7 years of relevant experience

Assets

3-4 years of experience with statistical software (R, Stata, Python, SAS etc.), including experience with fully reproducible programming.

Strong understanding of academic research context and university process & procedures generally

Understanding of the academic publishing process and research project timelines

Experience and understanding of sensitive data and sensitive data concepts

Experience working within the Statistics Canada Research Data Centre

Experience with the Canadian research data ecosystem, with emphasis on restricted and sensitive data

Bilingual (EN/FR)

Additional Information

The Key focus of this position:

Working under the supervision of the Director of Research, Training, and Knowledge Mobilization, the successful applicant will be responsible for data collection and data pipeline design to collect and manage the data related to the performance of the network. They will also be required to have a working knowledge of the datasets in the centres and be able to lend a creative and research-informed perspective to discussions between policymakers and the research portfolio.

The successful candidate will also be required to work across portfolios and develop their own solutions to data collection and processing requirements that arise in the context of the RDCs. They will meet with Government departments and be expected to represent the network in these conversations
