Position Summary
Monday-Friday 7am-5pm, Every other Saturday 7am-12:15pm
The Auto Dismantler / Auto Parts Puller is responsible for safely dismantling vehicles, recovering valuable components and materials, preparing vehicles for processing, and pulling quality used auto parts for resale. This position requires someone who can work independently, stay organized, take pride in their work, and maintain a strong focus on safety and efficiency.
Loader experience is considered a significant asset and may result in higher compensation opportunities.
Primary ResponsibilitiesVehicle Dismantling & Processing
- Drain vehicle fluids into approved containment systems.
- Reinstall drain plugs or cap openings after draining.
- Remove catalytic converters using approved cutting equipment.
- Remove and assess tires and rims:
- Steel wheels with poor tires directed to processing.
- Good tires separated for resale.
- Remove aluminum engines and transmissions and place in designated bins.
- Remove radiators and sort accordingly:
- Copper radiators
- Aluminum radiators
- Copper/aluminum radiators
- Process radiator fans by separating plastic components.
- Remove batteries and place them on charging shelves.
- Test batteries and sort for resale or core recycling.
- Remove wiring harnesses when practical.
- Remove drums, rotors, and mercury switches.
- During slower periods, recover:
- Starters
- Alternators
- A/C compressors
- Power steering pumps
Auto Parts Pulling
- Pull parts efficiently and carefully from inventory vehicles.
- Ensure parts are removed without damage.
- Inspect parts for quality and functionality.
- Prepare parts for inventory and customer orders.
- Maintain presentation standards for all resale parts.
- Assist sales and inventory teams by prioritizing customer orders.
Yard & Environmental Responsibilities
- Ensure vehicles are cleaned of scrap and non-conforming materials before entering inventory.
- Remove all batteries, catalytic converters, tires, rims, fluids, and prohibited materials.
- Dispose of fluids into proper containment systems.
- Clean up spills using absorbent materials.
- Process fuel pumps by removing hoses and lines.
- Sort and place all recovered materials in designated areas.
- Set up and maintain Gaylord boxes for material collection.
- Wrap and prepare battery skids for shipment.
- Keep dismantling areas clean, safe, and organized.
- Clean up debris and scrap continuously throughout the day.
End-of-Day Responsibilities
- Empty fluid pails into approved containment.
- Store all tools properly.
- Count and secure catalytic converters.
- Ensure all tanks and containers are closed.
- Turn off torches and properly wind hoses.
- Store cat cutters and specialty tools securely.
- Turn empty pails upside down.
- Leave the work area clean and ready for the next shift.
Equipment & Tool RequirementsRequired Personal Protective Equipment
- CSA-approved steel-toed safety boots
Required Personal Tools
Candidates must provide their own basic tool set including:
- Strong pry bar
- Socket sets (7mm-21mm)
- ½" drive ratchet and sockets
- ⅜" drive ratchet and sockets
- Combination wrenches
- Ball-peen hammer
- Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers
- Side cutters (recommended)
Additional tools are considered an asset.
JLM provides specialty tools and equipment.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 1 year experience in automotive dismantling, mechanics, auto recycling, or a related field.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to safely lift up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work independently and stay productive without constant supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and quality.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Preferred
- Loader experience.
- Heavy equipment experience.
- Automotive technician experience.
- Experience operating forklifts or material handling equipment.
- Experience in the recycling or salvage industry.
