Position Purpose:
Working closely with the Animal Shelter Supervisor, the Animal Shelter Coordinator will assist with overseeing the day to day animal shelter operations in addition to contributing to the overall growth of the animal shelter. This role will also focus on assisting with the development of the volunteer program, animal enrichment program, growing community relationships and creating training and development opportunities for the animal shelter team. Minimum Qualifications
- Two year post secondary diploma in Animal Sciences/Veterinary Technician or related discipline from an accredited College/University;
- Two years related professional experience in an animal environment, including experience in euthanasia, with six months experience with working with the public;
- Skill and efficiency required in the use of computers and all job related equipment; experience working with Shelter Buddy or a similar software is considered an asset;
- Weekend / holiday availability required;
- Minimum Class G Drivers¿ License required;
- MTO Drivers Abstract deemed as satisfactory by the Town;

JOB DESCRIPTION
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Working closely with the Animal Shelter Supervisor, the Animal Shelter Coordinator will assist with overseeing the day to day animal shelter operations in addition to contributing to the overall growth of the animal shelter. This role will also focus on assisting with the development of the volunteer program, animal enrichment program, growing community relationships and creating training and development opportunities for the animal shelter team.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Vehicle, telephone, computer, janitorial equipment, washing machines, catch-poles, cat net, cat/dog humane traps, feral den, medical equipment including but not limited to refractometer, woods lamp, microscope, microchip scanner, stethoscope, thermometer, weight scales, IV fluid equipment, specimen collection supplies and other equipment as may be necessary.
DIRECTION EXERCISED:
Gives working instructions to Animal Shelter Workers, seasonal/casual employees and volunteers.
WORKING PROCEDURES:
- Assists with cleaning, scrubbing and disinfecting all cages of the shelter on a daily basis;
- Ensures that clean water and fresh food is provided to the animals on a daily basis;
- Ensure that cleaning and disinfection protocols are followed for all dishes, etc. used to feed and water the animals;
- Ensure that floors are washed daily including the hosing down of outside kennels and walkways;
- Ensures the removal of animal feces on a regular basis and the cleaning and disinfection of the area; as well as litter boxes, indoor dog drains, etc;
- Will often come in contact with zoonotic diseases;
- Preference is to have this position, conduct the health examination of every animal upon intake; including vaccines and anti-parasitic treatment and/or prevention. Reports any abnormalities seen during health examination. Working with veterinary partners and / or Shelter Supervisor to create animal welfare plans including; dietary, medical and behaviour modification plans;
- Collects and processes specimens for external laboratory testing as deemed necessary by veterinarian, public health or Animal Shelter Supervisor. Completes in-house laboratory tests (fecal, urinalysis, etc.) of specimens on occasion;
- Monitors the health and observes the animals on a daily basis; advises the supervisor or designate of any concerns about the animals so that the appropriate action may be taken;
- Administers prescribed medications as needed on a daily basis;
- Participates in or leads daily animal rounds to ensure animal welfare plans and daily observations are communicated to shelter staff. Ensures rounds are documented and posted for staff;
- Provides environmental enrichment, socialization, and physical activity (such as walking the dogs, socializing cats etc.) to the animals within the facility as needed on a daily basis. Assists with the planning, development and implementation of individual and overall shelter animal enrichment programs;
- Monitors and completes behavioural/temperament assessments to ensure the animal is not threating or a health and safety concern to staff, and the public prior to adoption;
- Occasionally handles aggressive dogs / cats; using proper PPE to ensure health and safety to staff / animal i.e.: cat nets/catch poles;
- May occasionally handle/ process deceased animals brought in by patrol/public. Documents animal description on appropriate cremation tag;
- Assists with basic housekeeping duties i.e. laundry, dishes, sweeping/moping, to ensure overall cleanliness;
- Reports equipment failure and or health and safety concerns to Animal Shelter Supervisor;
- Seasonally completes winter maintenance; shovelling, salting, de-icing (walkways, kennels etc.);
- Picks up shelter supplies, donations, and transports animals for veterinarian appointments, animal transfers, and adoption opportunities (using the town vehicle provided) as necessary;
- Assists with and/or euthanizes animals as requested/necessary;
- May on occasion participate in on or off-site events and appear on televised programs for the promotion of the animal shelter;
- Assists with community events as directed;
- Provides on-site training to animal shelter workers, co-op students and volunteers as needed and acts as a mentor to further develop animal handling and animal care skills of team members. Working with the Shelter Supervisor, may be asked to research and present new continuing educational opportunities to the staff and volunteers;
- Working with the Shelter Supervisor, assists with the development and management of the shelter volunteer program;
- In the absence of the Supervisor, and when designated, may occasionally: oversee the day to day operations of the shelter; liaise with the Veterinarian regarding on-going and emergent medical cases, requisition tests as required; and dispense or continue medications as indicated or recommended by a licenced veterinarian;
- Other duties as assigned.
Administrative
- As required, responds daily to public inquiries in person, by telephone, email and social media with respect to adoption, redemption, animal/pet care, surrenders, lost and found pets, volunteering, donations, and other animal control matters;
- Exposure to people who may be impatient, irate or unpredictable: dealing with complaints;
- As required, liaises with Animal Services Officers and veterinary professionals in regards to stray/sick/behavioural injured domestic and wildlife animals;
- May admit animals brought in by Animal Services/PAWS/Other animal welfare organizations and the public daily. Logs all necessary information into computer software and medical reminder program. Creates appropriate file for new animal along with animal health booklet and daily observation documents I.e. Shelter Buddy;
- Maintains inventory control log of medication and medical supplies. Reports items to be ordered to administrative staff and/or shelter supervisor;
- Ensures equipment logs are up to date and that items are in good working order. Reports any damaged or missing equipment to supervisor;
- Prints daily treatment and medical care report in Shelter Buddy and delegates tasks to staff as needed. Ensures the completion or transfer of the tasks as needed on a day to day basis;
- Updates patient file and enters medical notes, lab results, daily observations and other documents as needed into Shelter Buddy;
- Dispenses medications as indicated or recommended by a veterinarian and ensures that medications are recorded in Shelter Buddy and on daily animal charts/welfare plans etc.;
- Ensures pets are up to date on all required treatments and assessments prior to being placed up for adoption;
- Provides administrative support to the supervisor as requested with respect to statistical reports, dispatching patrol officers and other tasks as deemed necessary from time to time;
- Completes weekly / monthly inspections of safety equipment
- Other administrative duties as required;

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- Two year post secondary diploma in Animal Sciences/Veterinary Technician or related discipline from an accredited College/University;
- Working knowledge of and exposure to WHMIS and related safety hazards considered an asset;
- Working knowledge of legislations as it applies to a municipal animal shelter i.e.: Pounds Act/Animals for Research Act;
- Two years related professional experience in an animal environment, including experience in euthanasia, with six months experience with working with the public
- Knowledge in the care and maintenance of animals, including the ability to determine the health and temperament of animals being admitted to the shelter;
- Ability to understand verbal and written instructions to perform all of assigned duties including phone and electronic communication;
- A team player with strong interpersonal skills including excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Previous experience in a leadership role considered an asset;
- Skill and efficiency required in the use of computers and all job related equipment; experience working with Shelter Buddy or a similar software is considered an asset;
- Proficient with Microsoft and social media applications;
- Weekend / holiday availability required;
- Ability to restrain large dogs and to lift light to heavy items;
- Minimum Class G Drivers¿ License required;
- Driver¿s Abstract in good standing required to operate Corporation vehicles;
- Up to six months period of adjustment, orientation and adaptation on the job.
