Caretaker
Salary: $43,116 to $50,988 per year

Qualifications:
- A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
- Two (2) to three (3) years of experience
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- A combination of education, training and experience may be considered

- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certificate
Nature and Scope of Work:
Reporting to the Manager, Security & Facility Operations, the Caretaker maintains a clean, safe, and functional environment across all assigned facilities. This role performs a range of custodial, basic maintenance, and groundskeeping duties, ensuring buildings and outdoor areas are well-kept and meet health and safety standards. The Caretaker operates cleaning equipment and uses chemicals safely, responds to routine and urgent cleaning or maintenance needs, and identifies and reports repair requirements. The position also supports facility operations through event set-ups, minor maintenance tasks, and seasonal duties such as snow removal. Working both independently and as part of the Facilities team, the Caretaker interacts regularly with staff, students, and external vendors while upholding a high standard of service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
General Cleaning Duties
- Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming
- Gather and empty trash
- Service, clean, and supply restrooms
- Clean, dust, and polish furniture, fixtures, machines, and equipment
- Clean windows, glass partitions, walls, and mirrors using soapy water, other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees
- Mix water and detergents/acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications
- Steam-clean or shampoo carpets
- Strip, seal, finish and polish floors
Specialized Cleaning & Restoration
- Clean and restore building interiors damaged by fire, smoke, or water using commercial cleaning equipment
- Clean chimneys, flues, and connecting pipes using power and hand tools
- Clean laboratory equipment such as glassware and metal instruments using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment
- Spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insect and rodent infestation
Equipment Operation & Safety
- Drive vehicles required to perform for travel to cleaning work including vans, industrial trucks, or industrial vacuum cleaners
- Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
- Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created
Physical Tasks & Maintenance Support
- Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies either manually or by using hand trucks
- Mow/trim lawns and shrubbery using mowers and hand and power trimmers and clear debris from grounds
- Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems
- Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas using snowplows, snow blowers and snow shovels, and spread snow melting chemicals
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties
- Set up, arrange and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings
Skills/Knowledge:
- Good understanding of cleaning procedures in a commercial/institutional setting
- Must be competent if use of commonly used cleaning chemicals, equipment and supplies
- Basic computer knowledge, working in a Microsoft 360 environment
Contacts (Internal and External):
- Work in conjunction with other facilities personnel and will be in regular contact with other college staff and faculty.
