We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team, based out of our Portland or Brunswick, Maine office. The Mechanical Engineer will support the design, development, testing, installation, and operation of marine hydrokinetic power systems. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys both technical design work and hands-on field problem-solving, and who wants to contribute to renewable energy solutions for communities that need resilient, locally produced power.
In this role, you will work across the lifecycle of ORPC’s marine energy systems, from mechanical design and analysis through fabrication support, testing, documentation, and field deployment. You may also lead subsystem designs or small research projects while collaborating closely with engineering, project development, permitting, and field teams.
- Design mechanical structures and subsystems using solid modeling, drafting, and mechanical analysis.
- Perform structural, fluid, tolerance, costing, and performance analyses to inform engineering decisions.
- Prepare engineering drawings, analysis reports, test reports, field reports, and other technical documentation.
- Support field and lab testing, installation, marine operations, and hands-on mechanical work.
- Develop statements of work and monitor outside contractor and vendor performance.
- Provide technical input to engineering, project development, site assessment, environmental permitting, and licensing teams.
- Educational Background:
A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent education.
- Proven Experience:

- Experience applying mechanical engineering principles to the design, analysis, fabrication, testing, or deployment of mechanical systems.
- Proficiency reading and producing technical drawings and communicating technical information clearly.
- Experience with parametric CAD software; SolidWorks experience is preferred.
- Experience with structural analysis, including stress analysis, fatigue, buckling, weld design, and deflection control.
- Ability to write technical proposals and reports in English.
- Python scripting.
- Experience with OpenFOAM.
- Experience with electrical power systems and SCADA, including VFDs, PLCs, inverters, battery systems, or microgrids.
- Spanish and/or French language skills.
This position is based out of our Portland or Brunswick, Maine office with flexible work-from-home options. This position includes a mix of desk-based engineering work and hands-on fieldwork. Field activities may include domestic and international travel to remote locations, work near water, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, walking on uneven terrain, occasional work near moving mechanical parts, and handling field equipment up to 50 lbs.
