Join the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)! The Northern Forestry Centre (NoFC) in Edmonton, Alberta, is filling a vacancy for the position of Manager, Analytical Chemistry Laboratory.
In this leadership role, you will oversee the operations of a multidisciplinary analytical laboratory that supports a wide range of forestry-related research and activities. You will lead a team of technical staff, manage laboratory budgets, and oversee the maintenance and operation of advanced analytical equipment and systems.
As a key technical authority reporting to the Director of Climate Change Research, your responsibilities will include implementing rigorous quality control protocols, developing and maintaining laboratory safety procedures, and fostering collaboration with internal and external research partners. From conducting specialized analyses and method development to optimizing laboratory systems, your work will contribute to advancing forestry research and supporting the scientific community.
Work environment
The Northern Forestry Centre (NoFC) is based in Edmonton, Alberta, and is one of five national research centres operated by the federal government’s Canadian Forest Service (CFS). NoFC has a primary focus on the forests and stakeholders of prairie and northern Canada, but also contributes to forest science issues relevant to regional, national and international priorities.

Education:
The minimum standard is:
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in chemistry.

1. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Experience:
- E1: Experience working in an analytical chemistry laboratory conducting chemical and/or biochemical analysis using analytical instruments (e.g., chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, or related techniques) in support of research or operational objectives.
- E2: Experience in planning, conducting and reviewing analytical method development independently with minimum supervision to support operational requirements.
- E3: Experience in collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including contributing technical expertise, discussing analytical needs, and supporting shared project outcomes in multidisciplinary environments.
- E4: Experience in interpreting and reporting results of analyses, preparing technical documents, and presentations that communicate laboratory findings to scientific, technical, or decision-making audiences

- K1: Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures, including quality assurance and quality control principles, related to the physical and chemical assessment of soil, plant and water.

Asset Education:

Asset Experience:
- AE1: Experience managing financial resources, such as budget forecasting, cost recovery methods, and capital planning in a laboratory context.
- AE2: Experience in the supervision of or assigning work to students and/or technical staff in an analytical laboratory, including resource allocation and operational planning.
- AE3: Experience using or managing advanced analytical instruments relevant to forestry or environmental analysis, such as Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP OES), Carbon-Nitrogen-Sulfur Analyzers (CNS), Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS), Ion Chromatograph and Discreet Analyzers, or comparable analytical instruments.
- AE4: Experience implementing quality assurance and control processes, such as inter-laboratory proficiency testing.
- AE5: Experience in organic chemistry processes, analysis and quantification including liquid-liquid and Soxhlet extractions, headspace (BTEX), Mass Spec characterizations along with associated method development.
