POSITION: Supervisor, Custodial and Operations
LOCATION: DCDSB - Operations & Maintenance Administrative Centre (OMAC) - 383 Chaleur Ave, Oshawa, ON - L1J 1G5
HOURS OF WORK: Afternoons - 7 hours (As per Management/Administrative Teams & Conditions) between 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (Please note some flexibility regarding start time may be required)
SALARY: Management/Administrative - S3 ($93,492 - $1082,230)

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Manager, Custodial and Operations, the primary purpose of this position is to support the Principals and Vice Principals in a site-based management environment with deployment of Custodial and Operations staff including performance management, mentoring, training, and assistance with operating and maintaining facilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports Principals and Vice-Principals with custodial and operational matters in a site-based management environment;

Works a flexible schedule, including afternoons and evenings, and may be required to adjust start and end times as needed to support operational requirements, provide coverage in the absence of a morning supervisor, and effectively supervise custodial staff across Board facilities;

Implements and monitors custodial and operational service standards established by Facilities Services;
-
Conducts cleanliness inspections of facilities, documents findings, provides reports, and follows up on identified deficiencies;

Provides training and retraining to custodial staff in accordance with Board procedures, collective agreement requirements, and applicable legislative or regulatory obligations;

Supports the day-to-day deployment of assigned custodial staff, including floaters, in consultation with Principals and the Manager, Custodial and Operations;

Provides coaching, mentoring, and guidance to custodial staff to support consistent service delivery and performance expectations;

Participates on hiring panels for Facilities Services staff, as assigned;

Supports the implementation of quality review processes and provides recommendations for improvement to the Manager, Custodial and Operations;

Supports maintenance services by reviewing school-level work orders with Principals and custodial staff and by using the Board’s work order system to monitor and follow up on operational concerns;

Participates in grievance and arbitration processes involving custodial and CUPE staff, as assigned and in consultation with Human Resource Services and the Manager;

Collaborates with the Disability Claims Management Officer on WSIB, sick leave, long-term disability, and return-to-work matters, as required;

Supports and contributes to performance appraisal processes for custodial staff in collaboration with Principals and the Manager, Custodial and Operations;

Supports attendance management, attendance support, and leave processes in conjunction with Principals, Human Resource Services, and the Manager to ensure consistent application of Board procedures;

Coordinates day-to-day contractor service delivery and follow-up for assigned operational services, such as landscaping, snow removal, and other operational contractors, and escalates performance or contract concerns to the Manager as required;

Coordinates custodial cleaning supplies, equipment, and related services within approved standards, processes, and budgets.

Supports and communicates waste management and recycling programs across Board sites;

Coordinates EcoSchools-related operational initiatives in collaboration with Academic Services and Facilities Services staff;

Develops and maintains custodial and operational systems manuals, procedures, and related resource materials for review and approval by the Manager;

Assists with the development and maintenance of custodial and operations training modules in collaboration with relevant internal and external subject-matter experts;

Assists with the development, implementation, and maintenance of custodial Standard Operating Procedures, including procedures related to equipment operation, working alone, confined spaces, community use, and other operational requirements;

Participates in and supports professional activity days and training sessions for custodial and CUPE employees.;

Coordinates assigned special projects during school shutdown periods;

Provides operational support for emergency and critical projects, as required;

Supports legislative, health and safety, insurance, and operational audits at Board sites and follows up on assigned deficiencies;

Supports community use initiatives throughout the Board;

Participates on committees as assigned, including Health and Safety, Ergonomics, Wellness, Environmental, Equity, Accessibility, and other related committees;

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Manager, Custodial and Operations; and

Participates in the Facilities Services rotational on-call schedule throughout the year.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
-
College diploma in a related field or the equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience in the custodial/maintenance field.
Experience
- Minimum five (5) years’ related work experience in custodial/maintenance fields;

Experience with training, mentoring and ensuring the success of fellow custodians;
-
Experience managing external contractors;
-
Experience with custodial cleaning supplies including exemplary application techniques, services and suppliers;
-
Knowledge of Unions and collective agreements.

Sound knowledge of computer applications software including: Microsoft Office, Word and Excel, COOL operating system, eBase (for health and safety and site inspections);
