Position: OTR Truck Driver

Tractor-trailer drivers are responsible for the safe and timely transport of goods over long or short distances, which involves much more than just driving. Their key responsibilities include vehicle inspection and maintenance, cargo management, route planning, adherence to extensive federal and state regulations, and communication.
Core Driving and Compliance Responsibilities
- Safe Operation: Operating heavy commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) safely and defensively, adhering to all traffic laws and speed limits.
- Hours of Service (HOS): Managing and accurately logging working and driving hours in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations to prevent fatigue.
- Route Planning: Planning efficient routes, using GPS or maps, and adjusting for traffic, weather, and road restrictions that prohibit large trucks.
- Documentation and Paperwork: Maintaining detailed logs of activities, mileage, fuel purchases, and delivery receipts (bills of lading).
Vehicle and Cargo Management
- Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections: Conducting thorough inspections of the truck and trailer before and after each trip (e.g., checking tires, brakes, lights, fluid levels, and coupling systems) and recording any defects.
- Cargo Securement: Ensuring cargo is properly located, distributed, balanced, and secured (using ropes, chains, binders, or covers) to prevent shifting or damage during transit.
- Basic Maintenance: Performing minor maintenance tasks such as refueling, cleaning the vehicle, checking oil, or installing tire chains when required.
- Hazardous Materials (Hazmat): Following specialized safety procedures and carrying specific equipment if transporting hazardous materials, which requires an additional endorsement on their Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Communication and Professionalism
- Communication: Regularly communicating with dispatchers, supervisors, and customers to provide updates on delivery status, report delays, incidents, or mechanical problems.
- Customer Service: Interacting professionally with clients during pickups and deliveries, acting as a representative of their company.
- Problem-Solving: Handling unexpected situations on the road, such as accidents or mechanical breakdowns, and making sound decisions independently.
Physical Requirements
While undertaking the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, the employee must repeatedly drive, operate equipment, reach, bend, twist, lift up to 50 lbs, sit for at least 8 hours a day, listen, speak, type, and move throughout the facility. They must be capable of using a keyboard and mouse/mouse pad for computer purposes.
