Maintenance Mechanic (Millwright / 433A) — Automated Manufacturing
Eco Guardian Inc. · Aurora, ON · Full-time, Permanent
Compensation: Estimate based on skills and experience - $34 to $42/hr
Keep the line running.
At Eco Guardian, our automated cup-forming lines turn out certified compostable foodservice packaging that our customers count on — every single shift. We're looking for a hands-on Maintenance Mechanic who takes pride in keeping high-speed equipment healthy and humming, and who sees every hour of uptime as a promise kept.
If you love diagnosing a tricky fault, owning the fix, and being the person the team trusts when something stops — this role may be for you.
Why this role matters
You are the reason the line stays up. From cup forming through packaging and boxing, you'll own the mechanical health of our full production system and our Aurora facility. Your work directly drives on-time delivery, consistent product quality, and a safe workplace — and as we grow, you'll help build the maintenance function from the ground up. This is a central, high-impact role.
What you'll do
- Act as the go-to mechanic for our automated cup-forming line — forming machines, cutting and trimming systems, conveyors, packaging and boxing equipment, and an 8-colour flexographic press
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and drive issues, and tackle routine electrical and controls faults within your capability
- Build and continuously improve our preventive maintenance program, tracking failure trends and spare-parts usage to boost reliability
- Support installation, commissioning, and start-up of new machines, including internationally sourced equipment
- Handle general facility upkeep — building systems, utilities, lighting, plumbing, doors, security and fire-alarm systems
- Know when to fix it in-house and when to bring in a qualified contractor — then scope, coordinate, and oversee that work to completion
- Work safely and by the book: OHSA, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and food-safety/GMP practices that protect product integrity
- Serve as an active member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee
What you bring
Must-haves
- Journeyperson trade certification (e.g., Millwright 433A) or equivalent trade certification with hands-on experience
- 7+ years of hands-on maintenance experience in an automated manufacturing or packaging environment
- A proven track record maintaining and troubleshooting high-speed, continuous production equipment
- Strong command of pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanical drives, sensors, motors, gearboxes, bearings, and conveyors
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and OEM manuals
Nice-to-haves
- Experience across full production lines (forming, conveying, packaging) rather than a single equipment type
- Food packaging / container manufacturing equipment experience
- Basic electrical or PLC troubleshooting
- Experience supporting start-ups, new installations, or facilities in ramp-up
- Experience coordinating and overseeing external contractors
What makes you a great fit
Proactive and ownership-driven. A methodical troubleshooter with sharp judgment on when to repair versus escalate — always with an eye on cost and downtime. A collaborative teammate who's just as effective working solo, and organized enough to keep clean records for PM, repairs, and parts.
The working environment
A busy manufacturing floor with moving machinery, noise, and production schedules. Expect regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to 25 kg, with occasional work at heights to access equipment. On-call availability and overtime may be required during ramp-ups and breakdowns, and you'll occasionally coordinate with OEMs across different time zones. PPE required at all times in production areas.
Why Eco Guardian
- Purpose you can stand behind — you'll help manufacture products that replace single-use plastics
- Build something — join a growing facility where you can shape the maintenance program and, over time, mentor others
- Real ownership — this is a trusted, central role with visibility across Production, Operations, and Quality

Application question(s):
- This could be hypothetical, think of a machine that forms or seals material using heat, pressure, and precise timing — for example a heat sealer, thermoformer, or any multi-station forming line.
Walk me through the process from raw material to finished part, and tell me the two or three stages where you'd expect the most frequent breakdowns or quality defects, and why.
- A machine that ran fine yesterday is now producing intermittent defects — say one bad part in twenty — and nothing was changed overnight. How do you approach diagnosing it, and what are the first things you check?
Education:
- AEC / DEP or Skilled Trade Certificate (preferred)
Experience:
- machine maintenance: 5 years (required)
