About the Role
We're a growing online retro video game store and consumer electronics business specializing in sourcing, restoring, and reselling classic gaming hardware. We're hiring an Electronics Repair Technician I to diagnose, repair, and restore video game consoles, handhelds, cartridges, and related electronics to optimal — and often resale-grade — condition.
This is an entry-to-intermediate role focused on the high-volume, mechanical, and component-level repairs that keep inventory moving. It's ideal for someone with hands-on repair experience who wants to deepen their skills in a specialized retro-gaming environment.
We're looking for someone with a high-energy yet calm, level-headed personality — the kind of person who brings real enthusiasm to the bench but stays composed and methodical when a repair gets tricky.
Examples of hardware you'll work on includes:
- Video game consoles — Nintendo, Sony, and others (Sega, Microsoft, Atari, etc.)
- Handhelds — Game Boy line, DS/3DS, PSP/PS Vita, Switch, and modern retro handhelds
- Games & cartridges, Digital & Film Cameras, iPhones — cleaning, screen/battery replacement, testing
Responsibilities
- Clean, test, and refurbish game cartridges, discs, and consoles for resale.
- Replace save batteries (e.g., CR2032/CR2025) in cartridges and consoles.
- Repair and replace controllers, joysticks, buttons, membranes, and ribbon cables, including analog stick drift fixes.
- Perform shell and housing replacements, screen replacements, and basic backlight/IPS screen swaps on handhelds.
- Complete through-hole and basic capacitor replacements under guidance.
- Diagnose common hardware faults using multimeters, technical manuals, and reference guides.
- Disassemble and reassemble devices using hand tools with care and precision.
- Test every repaired device for full functionality before it returns to a customer or inventory.
- Maintain accurate repair records — work performed, parts used, time spent.
- Support inventory management of repair parts, consumables, and tools.
- Communicate clearly with customers about repair status and outcomes when needed.
Qualifications
- Hands-on experience repairing electronics, or strong demonstrated aptitude (personal projects count).
- Comfort with hand tools, multimeters, hot air station, and basic soldering.
- Familiarity with gaming hardware across at least one major platform (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc.).
- Attention to detail and the patience for repetitive, precise work.
- Reliable, organized, and able to keep accurate records.
- A high-energy yet calm, composed approach to the work.
- Customer service experience is a plus but not required.
Nice to Have (Not Mandatory)
None of these are required, but they're a plus and help your application stand out:
- Past technician or repair work experience at a company.
- Access to a car (useful for sourcing runs and events).
- Genuine passion for retro gaming and/or electronics repair.
- Past experience working at a video game store.
Pay & Perks
- Hourly, [25-30/hr], commensurate with experience and possible option for paid per project arrangements after experience and trust is built over time.
- On-the-job training.
- Eligible to attend select expo and convention events as the team grows.
- Employee discount on our inventory.
- Option to be paid in store credit — take part of your compensation as store credit toward games, consoles, and gear at a preferred rate, if you'd like.
- Tools and equipment are provided — you're welcome to bring and use your own if you prefer.
- Regular short breaks between repairs are encouraged and paid — they help maintain focus and consistent, high-quality work.
Accountability & Budgets
Each repair is assigned a parts and materials budget, and technicians are expected to work within it. Where avoidable mistakes cause significant overruns, or where they happen repeatedly, it becomes a performance issue: the technician will be coached, and continued or serious budget overruns may result in removal from the role. We'd much rather help you work cleanly within budget than part ways, so we treat this as a clear, fair expectation set up front.
Compensation details are finalized based on experience. We're happy to discuss the path of Technician II during the interview.
