This position functions at a senior level to lead department best practice communications and leadership within the assigned department.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Provides strategic communications advice and support to the assigned government department;
- Receives all departmental media inquiries and coordinating the department’s response including creating key messages and responses and identifying the appropriate departmental spokesperson;
- Prepares speaking notes, ranging from short speeches on specialized topics and major addresses to federal/ provincial/ territorial counterparts and, community partners;
- Works as a member of the Senior Management team and program teams to develop and disseminate the strategic direction of the department and strategic initiatives to support departmental priorities;
- Leads corporate communications planning and activities to inform and engage the public, staff and partners of department initiatives;
- Provides leadership to the development and implementation of social media strategies and guidance to the department on legislative sittings and affairs;
- Provides leadership and communications management to develop and implement short and long-term internal/external strategic communications for significant public and media issues during times of crisis with the potential to impact public safety, security;
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants must have a university degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Experience in a similar communications role, within a complex public organization, and with a broad mandate; including an in-depth understanding of the organization’s key stakeholders and partners.
- Knowledge of government, public relations, strategic communications planning, and research techniques and processes.
- Must have a sound understanding of the policy issues that affect individuals, families and communities, and government decision-making processes.
- Must have excellent writing, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Must have advanced analytical skills and the ability to provide strategic advice at a senior level.
- Advanced communications planning skills; sound understanding of clear communications and how to foster clear communications within an organization and within the public forum.
- Must have strong interpersonal, collaborative and organizational skills, and be able to work in a team environment.
- Applicants must have a good previous work and attendance record. The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to beginning employment.
Other Qualifications:
- Experience in public sector communications would be considered an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of the Legislative Assembly of PEI is considered an asset.
