About Us
Lions Den Capital is a private mortgage lender serving brokers, borrowers, and investment partners across Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.
We fund creative, time-sensitive residential and small commercial mortgage opportunities where traditional lenders cannot. We are looking for a Senior Mortgage Underwriter who can evaluate complex files, make sound credit recommendations, and communicate decisions clearly.
To be considered for this position, candidates must submit a video to [email protected] along with their resume. The video should address the two questions outlined below.
This is a hands-on underwriting role. Your job is to apply excellent judgment, protect capital, and help good deals get funded efficiently.
What you’ll do
- Review and underwrite private residential and commercial mortgage applications.
- Analyze credit, income, net worth, equity, security, property, borrower experience, and exit strategy.
- Review appraisals, titles, corporate documents, financial statements, and supporting documentation.
- Identify missing information, inconsistencies, risks, and potential fraud or compliance concerns.
- Structure appropriate loan terms, conditions, and recommendations.
- Prepare clear approval, decline, or conditional approval recommendations for ownership.
- Communicate professionally with mortgage brokers, borrowers, lawyers, appraisers, and other third parties.
- Manage your assigned underwriting pipeline and maintain accurate, complete files.
- Follow established AML, FINTRAC, KYC, and internal compliance procedures, escalating concerns when required.
- Provide practical solutions without compromising lending standards.
You’re likely a fit if you:
- Have 2–5+ years of mortgage underwriting, private lending, alternative lending, credit, or closely related experience.
- Have personally underwritten complex residential or commercial mortgage files.
- Understand how to assess the full deal: borrower, property, leverage, liquidity, documentation, and exit.
- Can make decisions without needing every file to fit a bank’s checklist.
- Are detail-oriented without becoming slow or overly bureaucratic.
- Can clearly explain why a deal works, why it does not, or what would need to change.
- Are comfortable pushing back on brokers and ownership when the risk is not justified.
- Take ownership of deadlines, follow-up, and file quality.
- Have Canadian mortgage experience, preferably in Alberta, British Columbia, and/or Saskatchewan.
- Are local to Calgary
What success looks like
Within your first 90 days, you will be able to:
- Independently underwrite active files with consistent turnaround.
- Produce clear, defensible credit recommendations.
- Identify major risks before they become funding or investor problems.
- Maintain clean, complete underwriting files.
- Earn the trust of ownership, brokers, lawyers, and lending partners.
Why join Lions Den Capital?
- Direct access to ownership and meaningful influence on lending decisions.
- Complex, non-cookie-cutter files instead of repetitive institutional underwriting.
- A lean team where judgment matters and strong performance is visible.
- Calgary-based hybrid flexibility for the right candidate.
- Opportunity for growth within the company.
- Compensation based on experience, judgment, and contribution: $50,000–$85,000 per year.
