Position: Chemist
Company: OzoneBio
Location: Calgary, AB
Type: Full-time
About OzoneBio
OzoneBio is a cleantech company developing sustainable, low-carbon routes to industrial chemicals, including bio-based adipic acid for polymers, textiles, and plastics. We combine biochemical, catalytic, and separation technologies to replace fossil-derived chemistry with environmentally superior processes.
Position Summary
OzoneBio is seeking an experienced Organic Chemist to lead experimental research on bio-oil fractionation, catalytic upgrading, and organic synthesis. This role is ideal for a creative scientist who enjoys solving challenging chemical problems, designing experiments independently, and developing new processes from first principles.
This is not a routine analytical or production role. We are looking for someone who can think critically, troubleshoot complex reactions, and drive research with minimal supervision, not simply follow established SOPs.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently design, execute, and optimize organic synthesis and catalytic reaction pathways
- Develop and troubleshoot bio-oil fractionation and upgrading processes
- Operate, modify, and troubleshoot fixed-bed and flow reactor systems
- Design experiments, interpret results, and propose next research directions
- Prepare catalysts, reaction mixtures, and purification workflows
- Characterize reaction products using GC-MS, HPLC, GC, or related analytical techniques
- Maintain detailed experimental records and communicate findings to the R&D team
- Contribute innovative ideas to solve technical challenges and accelerate technology development
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, or a closely related field (minimum education: M.Sc.)
- At least 5 years of industrial R&D experience in organic or process chemistry
- Demonstrated expertise in multistep organic synthesis and reaction optimization
- Experience operating fixed-bed, flow, or high-pressure reactor systems
- Proven ability to independently plan experiments, troubleshoot reactions, and solve complex technical problems
- Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and synthetic strategy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with biomass-derived chemicals, catalysis, renewable fuels, or bio-based chemicals
- Experience scaling laboratory chemistry toward pilot or commercial processes
- Familiarity with analytical techniques including GC-MS, HPLC
