Talent Partner (Recruiter / Business Development)
Who We Are
Modern People Solutions (MPS) is a fractional HR and recruitment advisory firm — think of us as an outsourced HR and Recruitment department. We help clients with Fractional HR, recruitment, leadership training, and HR software implementation (ATS and HRIS platforms — we’re a registered partner with several leading HR tech companies). We’re a trusted advisor to our clients, helping them boost profitability, reduce stress for leaders and employees, and deliver HR and recruiting solutions that actually work.
Our clients are primarily growing small to medium-sized businesses (20–500 employees) across Canada and internationally. We’ve earned the trust of well-known names too — ATB has sponsored our events, and some of the world’s largest global (and local) law firms refer their clients to us for HR and recruiting support.
We work across three core industries: equipment dealerships and construction, professional services (especially healthcare practices like veterinarians and dentists), and not-for-profits making an impact around the world. We’re deliberately not a volume-based HR or recruitment shop — we work exclusively on retainer, hourly, or placement fee for recruitment, and we’d rather build genuine relationships and present a handful of exceptional candidates than flood clients with average ones.
What Does The Opportunity Look Like
We’re growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Talent Partner (Recruiter / Business Development) to help us support our existing clients and build relationships with new ones — with a focus on businesses with 100+ employees. This is a role with variety: your time will shift between roughly 50–70% recruitment and 30–50% business development depending on what the business needs. When recruitment is busy, you’ll lean into that; when things are quieter, you’ll be out building our pipeline of new clients. This is a role for someone who wants to actively shape our growth, not wait for opportunities to land in their inbox.
This is a permanent, part-time position, averaging 20 hours per week (+/-) in Calgary, with a clear intention to grow into full-time as our client base expands — and you’ll play a direct role in making that happen. You’ll need your own laptop and cell phone for work. We’re taking our time to find the right person for this role, so please note we won’t be filling this position in the coming weeks — we’d rather wait for the right fit.
Recruitment (50–70%)
- Own the full recruitment cycle for our clients — from drafting and posting job ads, to sourcing candidates, conducting initial interviews, coordinating client interviews, keeping candidates in the loop, presenting and negotiating offers, and completing reference checks.
- Bring a sharp eye to candidate screening — we only present clients with top-tier talent, so in-depth interviewing are key.
- Deliver a candidate and client experience that reflects MPS’s quality-first, relationship-focused reputation.
- Be the trusted point of contact for clients, keeping them informed and engaged throughout the search.
Business Development (30–50%)
- Build genuine relationships with prospective clients through networking, industry events, referrals, and community involvement — this is relationship-building, not high-pressure sales.
- Turn those relationships into new client engagements and long-term repeat business.
Bonus Responsibilities (Not Required, but optional for those with experience or that want to do it)
- Support clients at a strategic level — recruitment strategy, candidate pipeline development, employer branding, and recruitment process design.
- Support with small business applicant tracking system implementations
What’s In It For You
You’re joining MPS at a pivotal point. You’ll get to see the impact you make with clients first hand, play a key role in supporting our growth and get to share your ideas.
- Compensation of $28–$31 per hour to start, based on experience. When this role transitions to full-time, it becomes a base salary of $60,000–$65,000, plus a benefits allowance or health spending account.
- An incentive plan on top of the base pay, rewarding you for new clients you bring in and placements you fill.
- The flexibility of a part-time schedule now, with a clear path to full-time as our client roster grows.
- A hybrid model — no required office days, work from home, and flexibility with your schedule (within business hours and operational needs). You’ll be expected to attend networking events, and we also have occasional team lunches and meetings at the Petroleum Club.
- Work with a growing HR and recruitment firm serving clients across Canada and internationally.
- Direct mentorship from an experienced team: our Founder Wilson, who’s worked across a diverse range of industries, grown well-known companies to be #1 in their category, hired candidates around the world, and taught HR classes at SAIT’s School of Business; Ayla, our Client Success Manager, who’s exceptional at business development; Steve, an HR Consultant with a PhD in Psychology and a background in data science who leads complex ERP implementations; and Colleen, who handles global and executive compensation.
- A relationship-first, quality-over-volume culture — you won’t be pushed to churn out placements at the expense of doing right by clients and candidates.
- Room to grow into a more strategic role as your experience and our business develop together.
What We’re Looking For
- 2+ years of recruitment experience, minimum.
- Sales experience, or a demonstrated ability and genuine interest in developing business through relationships.
- A highly motivated, results-driven mindset.
- It would be a plus if you have recruitment experience within our core industries — equipment dealerships, construction, healthcare, or not-for-profit.
- A degree in HR would be an asset (not required) and you could grow your HR experience with our firm (optional)
Where We’re Headed
MPS is on a deliberate growth path. We’re building toward a physical presence in multiple locations across Canada, with an eye toward deepening our international reach. Joining now means growing alongside us — the relationships and expertise you build today will help shape what MPS looks like tomorrow. This won’t happen overnight; it will take time, and we want people who are excited for that journey, not just the destination.
