Night Shift Maintenance Worker

The Maintenance Helper supports the plant's maintenance department in preserving machinery performance, optimizing operator efficiency, and reducing operational downtime. This heavy industrial role involves a mix of mechanical assistance, material handling, equipment cleaning, and adherence to strict environmental health and safety protocols.
What You Will Be Doing, as a Maintenance Worker
- Operate, maintain and control the MZR machine- organize weight logs, ash drums and inventory. Ensure the machine is maintained, cleaned and efficient.
- Move ash drums, manage weight logs, and help organize plant inventory.
- Assist millwrights and technicians with routine preventative maintenance on plant machinery.
- Help set up, monitor, and adjust production machines or vendor logs.
- Clean and maintain mechanical tools, ensuring they are stored safely and securely.
- Assist kettle operators with drossing (removing impurities from molten zinc) and clearing the work area.
- Assist in facility repairs, structural upkeep, and basic plumbing or electrical troubleshooting.
- Transport raw steel materials and finished galvanized products using forklifts, hoists, or hand trucks.
- Load and unload storage areas, delivery vehicles, and treatment racks.
- Sort scrap metal, wire, and debris to keep the production floor unobstructed.
- Clean work sites, wipe down machinery, and dispose of industrial garbage according to set policies.
- Use hand tools, deburrers, and grinders to remove excess zinc needles, scale, or rust from metal surfaces.
- Use oxygen and acetylene torch and welding machine.
- Operate all equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
- Suggest changes in manufacturing that will increase machine performance, operator efficiency or reduce downtime.
- Help oversee and complete routine daily inspections of motors, electrical systems, HVAC and utility equipment, power generation equipment, boilers, kettles, air compressors, furnaces, manufacturing equipment and material handling equipment.
- Instructed to work with the other members of the team to coordinate and oversee various capital or repair projects as required.
What You Should Have, as a Maintenance Worker
- Ability to work in Extreme Temperatures: Exposure to high heat near molten zinc kettles (around 450°C/840°F) and seasonal outdoor weather.
- Fumes & Chemicals: Regular exposure to industrial vapors, acid fumes from flux/pickling tanks, and zinc dust.
- Physical Labor: Requires continuous bending, standing for long shifts, and repetitive heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs.
- Safety Gear: Mandatory use of PPE including respirators, face shields, safety boots, and heat-resistant clothing.
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Experience: 1+ years in a heavy manufacturing, foundry, steel fabrication, or construction environment is highly asset-oriented
- Skills: Ability to read work orders, basic knowledge of hand/power tools, welding, oxygen/acetylene torch and strong teamwork skills.
In Return, You Will Receive:
- $27.83 + 1.00 shift premium
- Paid weekly, on Fridays ( a week behind)
- 4% vacation pay – accrued and paid out when you need it
- Access to a Vertical Representative Monday to Friday 8am to 11pm and on weekends
The Shift You Will be Working is:
- Evenings - 10:00pm-6:00am
