Controller – Construction & Corporate Accounting
Full-Time | Monday to Friday | In-Office Position
Location: Port Coquitlam, BC
Compensation
$85,000–$105,000 per year starting, based on experience and qualifications.
Performance bonuses and advancement opportunities are available based on accuracy, results, ownership of the accounting process, process improvements, and company growth.
Company Overview
We are a construction, excavation, demolition, trucking, and equipment-based group of companies looking for an experienced Controller – Construction & Corporate Accounting to support and oversee our accounting operations.
This is a strong accounting role for someone who understands full-cycle accounting, construction accounting, reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, cash flow, job costing, and corporate accounting across related companies.
This is not a basic bookkeeping position. We already have support for accounts payable and payroll. We need someone who can review the back-end accounting, catch errors, reconcile accounts, review project costs, improve processes, and help ensure the numbers are accurate and reliable.
The right person must be efficient, organized, honest, practical, and willing to dig into the details when something does not make sense.
About the Role
The Controller will be responsible for reviewing and supporting the accounting flow across multiple related companies. This position requires someone who can work with management, internal staff, external accountants, and ownership to keep accounting records accurate, organized, and properly supported.
A key part of this role will include reviewing subcontractor costs. Subcontractors are a major part of our project costs and cash flow, and this responsibility goes beyond standard accounts payable entry. We need someone who can review subcontractor invoices, confirm proper coding and backup, understand the impact on budgets and cash flow, and flag concerns before they become expensive problems.

Key ResponsibilitiesAccounting Oversight
- Review accounting activity across multiple related companies.
- Review accounts payable and payroll activity for accuracy.
- Review general ledger entries, coding, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure GST, payroll remittances, payables, cash flow, and accounting records are properly maintained.
- Identify errors, duplicate entries, incorrect coding, missing backup, and unusual transactions.
- Help ensure accounting files, reports, and backup documents are organized and complete.
Month-End and Reporting
- Complete and/or review month-end accounting procedures.
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial reports.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loans, GST, payroll accounts, and intercompany accounts.
- Review balance sheet and income statement accounts for accuracy.
- Prepare reports for management and ownership.
- Help explain financial results in clear, practical language.
Budgeting, Cash Flow, and Project Costing
- Review actual costs against budgets and flag concerns.
- Assist with cash flow tracking and reporting.
- Review project costs, subcontractor costs, and cost coding for accuracy.
- Help management understand where money is going and where issues may be developing.
- Support decision-making with accurate financial information.
- Identify risks, cost issues, inefficiencies, and areas needing correction.
Subcontractor Cost Review
- Review subcontractor invoices, backup, approvals, and coding.
- Monitor subcontractor costs as a major part of project costs and cash flow.
- Review subcontractor costs against budgets, estimates, and expected project costs.
- Identify unusual charges, duplicate billing, missing backup, or cost overruns.
- Work with management and project teams to understand subcontractor commitments and upcoming cash flow requirements.
- Help ensure subcontractor payments are properly reviewed before payment is released.
Intercompany and Corporate Accounting
- Review and reconcile due-to/from accounts between related companies.
- Ensure intercompany transactions are recorded correctly.
- Help create clear procedures for intercompany accounting.
- Work with management and external accountants to ensure corporate accounting is properly tracked and supported.
Year-End and Accountant Support
- Prepare accounting schedules and reconciliations for year-end.
- Support external accountants with required reports, backup, and working papers.
- Help resolve accounting questions and reporting issues.
- Ensure records are clean and organized for year-end review.
Process Improvement
- Help improve accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Assist with creating clear accounting SOPs.
- Identify gaps in current systems and recommend practical improvements.
- Help organize recurring accounting duties by daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual requirements.
- Support a more efficient and accurate accounting process.
Required Experience and Skills
- Experience as a Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Bookkeeper, or senior full-cycle accounting professional.
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting, general ledger, reconciliations, GST, payroll remittances, accounts payable, financial reporting, and month-end procedures.
- Strong Excel skills are required.
- Experience with Sage 100 Contractor is strongly preferred.
- Construction, excavation, demolition, trucking, equipment, or project-based accounting experience is a strong asset.
- Experience with multiple companies and intercompany transactions is strongly preferred.
- Experience reviewing subcontractor invoices, job costing, project costs, purchase orders, holdbacks, progress billing, or construction-related vendor costs is an asset.
- Ability to review reports and identify errors, missing information, or cost concerns.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Strong communication skills with management, staff, and external accountants.
- Practical problem-solving skills and willingness to dig into the numbers.
Excel Skills Required
The successful candidate must be confident using Excel for reporting, reconciliations, budgets, cash flow tracking, analysis, formulas, pivot tables, sorting, filtering, and reviewing large amounts of accounting information.
Software
- Sage 100 Contractor experience is strongly preferred.
- Strong Microsoft Excel experience is required.
- Microsoft Office and digital file organization experience is required.

This is not a basic data-entry bookkeeping position. We need someone who can review, reconcile, question, correct, organize, and improve the accounting process.
