As Senior VP, Orchids (Growing and Commercial Operations), you will, in conjunction with the CEO, serve as the Senior VP for the intake, growth, and sale of pre-finished and finished phalaenopsis plants for sale throughout Canada and the USA.
As Bevo continues to grow and develop through both physical expansion and introduction of new crops, there is a requirement for added leadership to manage emerging business verticals which require a specialized degree of contribution. By leveraging your knowledge and experience in an efficient greenhouse environment producing orchids at scale, you will play a vital role in supporting Bevo’s corporate objectives as it seeks to implement a sizable, professional orchid program in the North American marketplace.
Executive Mandate & Authority
The Senior VP, Orchids is accountable for the full performance of the Orchid business (finished and pre-finished), including production, quality, sales alignment and profitability.
This role operates as the executive decision-maker for Orchid operations, with delegated authority from the CEO and Board within approved strategic, financial, and operational parameters.
This role is expected to:
· Make day-to-day and tactical decisions independently
· Lead strategic recommendations for Board approval
· Execute Board approved strategies with full ownership and accountability
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and lead the execution, of Bevo’s pre-finished and finished orchid program
- Act as the primary decision-maker for Orchid operations, with delegated authority from the CEO and Board, including production, crop strategy, and operational execution within approved business plans
- Own the Orchid business unit P&L, including yield, cost of production, pricing alignment, gross margin and fixed production overhead
- Develop and execute the long-term Orchid strategy, including genetics, capacity expansion, and market positioning across North America
- Lead capital allocation decisions for Orchid operations, including greenhouse expansion, infrastructure investments, and productivity initiatives, subject to Board-approved thresholds
- Serve as the subject matter expert on orchid growth and business strategy
- Direct and standardize Orchid operations across all Bevo sites, including Edmonton, Langley, and future facilities, with authority over production protocols and performance outcomes. Partner with Sales leadership to drive outcomes, including crop planning aligned to demand, pricing strategy input, and sell-through performance
- Accountable production planning, space and labor
- Provide guidance and training to the Growing Team on the best-practice growth of orchid rearing.
- Oversee both quantitative and qualitative analysis on the orchid business on an ongoing basis
- Lead customer and vendor relationships and serve as main Orchid business touch-point
- Oversee standards of plant quality and timeliness are upheld
- Ensure the stewardship of necessary recordkeeping, and compliance-related materials, including but not limited to CFIA-required documentation, crop-records, etc.
- Present operational performance, strategic initiatives, and investment proposals to the CEO and Board, and contribute to enterprise-level decision-making
- Accountable for key performance indicators, including:
- Yield per sq ft
- Sell-through rates
- Crop loss/Disease rates/shrinkage
- Labor efficiency
- Contribution margin
- Production overhead
- Domestic and International travel as required
- Assist in the development of SOPs and institutionalized knowledge of orchids
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in horticulture with specific education in Phalaenopsis cultivation
- Formal management and leadership education and/or training is essential
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in Phalaenopsis and Cymbidium production
- Solid understanding of orchid production and international sales
- Experience managing large, complex teams
- Proven track record of training and developing growers
- Ability to travel to facilities located in other geographical regions
Permanent position, full-time
$234,000 per year. Signing and retention bonus. Housing allowance.
