Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering with functional supervision from the Chair of Computer Science, this position provides computer systems and application support to faculty and students of the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. The Information Technology (IT) support is primarily focused on teaching, research and learning and includes support for the Computer Science Laboratory.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Installing computer systems and peripherals;
- Analyzing, installing, and maintaining operating systems, networking software, utilities, and hardware;
- Managing user accounts and requests, system administration, Linux maintenance, and other computer systems, including Apple and Microsoft;
- Providing support to specific computing needs that arise in the computer science courses and faculty research, including assisting in selection and acquisition of equipment, developing documentation, offering limited tutorial instruction, and managing the virtual desktop environment and email system;
- Monitoring systems, responding to alerts, and diagnosing and troubleshooting system problems;
- Administering printing systems and queues on print servers;
- Documenting of configuration and system changes;
- Developing project plans with tasks and timelines for infrastructure projects; and
- Supervising laboratory operations, including assisting students with systems problems, preparing work schedules, and supervising and training student laboratory assistants.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, together with a minimum of three years’ directly related experience with operating systems and networks, preferably in an academic environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Previous experience with UNIX and Windows operating systems in a networked hybrid environment, with exposure to the tools prominently used in Computer Science courses and research activities is required. Experience with software installation, scripting, and scripting languages is essential. Experience with server and software configuration, as well as GPUs, is considered an asset.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse group of clients, including senior technical staff, support staff, faculty, and students are essential. You are also able to make presentations. In addition, you demonstrate the ability to handle a workload with frequently changing priorities and interruptions.
Salary
This position has been classified at a Grade 10. The annual salary range for this position is $74,019.40 to $77,058.80, and the normal starting salary will be $74,019.40.

Normal hours of work will be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. However, considerable flexibility is required as there are significant requirements for overtime and off-hours work, with opportunity for compensatory time off.
