The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly motivated Commercial Mortgage Underwriter who will take ownership of the entire file lifecycle: onboarding, document intake, underwriting support, lender submission, condition management, and closing.
This role combines financial analysis, operational precision, and exceptional client communication. It is ideal for a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and wants deep involvement in every aspect of commercial financing.
Key Responsibilities
Deal Intake & Onboarding
- Act as a primary point of contact for new borrowers during initial engagement
- Set expectations, request required documentation, and maintain CRM accuracy
- Schedule client and partner meetings and prepare agendas
Document Management & Verification
- Gather, track, validate, and organize borrower and property documents
- Maintain standardized filing structure and compliance readiness
Financial Analysis & Underwriting Support
- Review borrower financial profiles, net worth, and liquidity
- Interpret rent rolls, P&Ls, construction budgets, and third-party reports
- Assist in preparing underwriting packages and lender-ready presentations
- Build multi-lender term sheet comparison models and sizing analysis
Submission & Commitment Execution
- Support lender submissions, Q&A, and follow-ups
- Track deposits, legal fees, and condition timelines
- Ensure insurer and lender conditions are satisfied accurately and on schedule
Closing Coordination & Post-Close
- Maintain active communication with borrowers, lenders, lawyers, and third-party partners
- Confirm all conditions precedent to funding are met prior to closing
- Coordinate file transition to servicing with complete documentation
Direct Transaction Exposure
- Shadow senior originators on lender and client calls
- Participate in property tours and on-site inspections
- Own defined lender engagement responsibilities as experience grows
Continuous Improvement
- Identify workflow efficiencies and drive SOP development
- Support technology enhancements, automation, and data integrity initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Real Estate or similar (CFA/CPA/AACI/MBA an asset)
- 2+ years’ experience in commercial underwriting or financial analysis
- High proficiency with Excel (analysis, models, pivots, validation)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a client-focused presence
- Ability to manage multiple active files with urgency and precision
