About the Role
Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Civil Superintendent will be responsible for leading all field execution activities related to industrial civil construction scopes, with a strong emphasis on:
- Structural concrete
- Concrete foundations
- Concrete placement and finishing
- Earthworks
- Underground utilities
- Site development
- Civil infrastructure construction
The successful candidate will oversee site activities, coordinate labour and subcontractors, ensure compliance with safety and quality standards, and work collaboratively with project teams to achieve successful project outcomes.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Leadership & Project Execution
- Lead and supervise field execution of heavy civil and industrial construction activities with a strong focus on:
- Concrete foundations
- Structural concrete
- Concrete placement, finishing, curing, and quality control
- Earthworks and grading
- Underground utility installation
- Site development activities
- Participate in bid reviews and pre-construction planning activities, validating constructability, production rates, quantities, and execution strategies.
- Review and interpret IFC drawings, civil drawings, shop drawings, rebar drawings, and technical specifications to ensure work is executed safely and accurately.
- Oversee self-perform and subcontracted civil work, ensuring compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and construction schedules.
- Monitor and interpret concrete and soils testing results, including:
- Slump testing
- Air content testing
- Concrete compressive strength testing
- Soil compaction testing
- Develop and maintain detailed look-ahead schedules to ensure labour, equipment, materials, and subcontractors are aligned with project requirements.
- Coordinate multiple work fronts including concrete crews, earthworks crews, underground utility crews, subcontractors, and union labour.
- Monitor productivity and construction progress while proactively identifying risks and constraints.
- Participate in constructability reviews and project planning activities.
Safety & Quality Leadership
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across all project activities.
- Ensure compliance with site-specific safety programs, corporate policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct site inspections, safety meetings, and hazard assessments.
- Work closely with EHS representatives to create and enforce project-specific safety programs and policies.
- Ensure all work meets quality requirements, specifications, and applicable standards.
Stakeholder & Team Management
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to field personnel and subcontractors.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing site culture.
- Interface professionally with clients, consultants, inspectors, unions, and regulatory authorities.
- Collaborate with Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, Quality, Labour Relations, and Safety teams.
- Support change management, risk mitigation, and issue resolution activities.
Qualifications Required
- Minimum 5+ years of construction leadership experience within heavy civil, industrial construction, infrastructure, or related environments.
- Proven experience leading field crews on industrial civil or heavy civil construction projects.
- Significant experience with civil construction scopes including:
- Earthworks
- Underground utilities
- Structural concrete
- Concrete foundations
- Site development
- Civil infrastructure
- Demonstrated experience with concrete construction processes including:
- Concrete placement
- Finishing
- Curing
- Concrete quality control
- Rebar coordination
- Working knowledge of concrete and soils testing procedures, standards, and interpretation of test results.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret:
- Civil drawings
- IFC drawings
- Shop drawings
- Rebar drawings
- Construction specifications
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, workforce planning, productivity management, and field execution.
- Proven ability to coordinate multiple work fronts within complex project environments.
- Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and team development.
Highly Preferred
- Previous experience working on industrial, energy, utility, water and wastewater, mining, or major infrastructure projects.
- Experience working within unionized construction environments.
- Trade certification, Civil Engineering Technology diploma, Construction Management education, or related technical training.
- Previous supervisory, foreperson, or superintendent experience on concrete-intensive industrial projects.
Please Note: This is not a commercial buildings, residential, tenant improvement, or wood-frame construction opportunity. Candidates whose experience is primarily focused in these areas will not be considered for this role.
