Job Description
Mitchelmore Engineering Limited (Meco) is seeking a Junior Civil Engineer to join our team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent (EIT) or early-career (P.Eng.) civil engineering graduate who is looking to build strong technical experience in a small, collaborative consulting engineering environment. The successful candidate will support civil, structural, hydrotechnical, and geotechnical engineering projects, with exposure to design, analysis, field work, construction support, technical reporting, and project coordination.

Key Responsibilities
The Engineer-in-Training will support engineering work across the following areas:
Design and Analysis
- Conduct assignments of limited scope and complexity using standard engineering methods and techniques.
- Assist with civil, structural, hydrotechnical, and geotechnical design and analysis.
- Support the design of hydraulic structures, including calculating loads and reviewing materials and layouts.
- Collect and analyze technical information, field data, test results, and investigation findings.
- Research technical literature, standards, and precedents to support engineering decisions.
- Assist senior engineers with calculations, technical tasks, and project deliverables.
- Prepare draft portions of technical reports.
- Complete assignments in accordance with industry standards and accepted engineering practice.
- Learn and use technical software platforms to support engineering analysis and design.
Field Work and Inspections
- Complete field observations and measurements under the direction of a supervising engineer.
- Collect field information to support design verification and project documentation.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, construction support, proposal preparation, and project-related travel within the Atlantic Region.
- Follow Meco’s safety policies and procedures while working in the office and at offsite locations.
- Represent Meco professionally when interacting with clients, contractors, other professionals, and the public.
Construction Support
- Become familiar with project requirements and Meco’s design intent.
- Observe construction activities for general compliance with the design intent of the responsible engineer.
- Identify and communicate potential non-conformance with project requirements or design intent.
- Prepare detailed daily field reports documenting activities, observations, and opinions provided during the workday.
Project Management Support
- Provide technical support to project managers as required.
- Accurately track and report time and expenses in Meco’s project management software.
- Provide updates on task progress, timelines, and project deliverables.
- Support project documentation, reporting, and coordination with internal team members.
Professional Development
- Maintain accurate logs and records in accordance with professional regulatory requirements.
- Participate in on-the-job and online training as required.
- Identify professional development needs and discuss opportunities with your supervisor.
- Develop both technical and non-technical skills, including communication, client service, teamwork, and project coordination.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or equivalent civil engineering degree.
- Engineer-in-Training designation in Nova Scotia, or eligibility to register as an EIT.
- Strong analytical, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Self-motivation and willingness to learn.
- Ability to manage time efficiently while remaining flexible to changing tasks and priorities.
- Professional judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality with organizational and client information.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel within the Atlantic Region for site visits and field work.
No previous professional engineering experience is required. On-the-job training will be provided.
Preferred Skills and Experience
The following would be considered assets:
- Exposure to technical engineering software such as GeoStudio, S-FRAME, HEC-RAS, or similar platforms.
- Understanding of project management processes.
- Familiarity with tracking timelines, budgets, and schedules.
- Interest in business development and proposal preparation.
- Previous co-op, field, construction, or consulting engineering experience.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
This role may require:
- Lifting up to 20 lbs, such as field equipment or field boxes.
- Sitting for prolonged periods while completing design or computer-based work.
- Intense visual concentration while using computer software.
- Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, heat, cold, noise, and inclement weather during site visits and inspections.
- Frequent work in an office environment.
