Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Revenue Accountant is responsible for end‑to‑end revenue accounting and revenue integrity across Toronto Botanical Garden’s diverse revenue streams. This role focuses on ensuring that revenue recorded in QuickBooks Online (QBO) is complete, accurate, fully reconciled to source systems, and analytically supported.
This position is ideal for an accountant who enjoys connecting operational systems to financial results, performing detailed reconciliations, and investigating and explaining revenue variances. While some transactional accounting is required, the role is primarily focused on reconciliations, analysis, and revenue control, rather than high‑volume bookkeeping.
Key Responsibilities
· Revenue Accounting & Recognition
o Own the reconciliation of all revenue feeder systems to QuickBooks Online, including Shopify, EventPro, Raiser’s Edge, Eventbrite and external parking contractor reports.
o Independently identify, investigate, and resolve timing differences, system mismatches, and posting discrepancies between source systems and the general ledger.
o Prepare and review revenue‑related journal entries, including deferred revenue, accruals, and true‑ups, in accordance with TBG’s revenue recognition policies.
o Reconcile and maintain key revenue‑related balance sheet accounts, including:
o Deferred / unearned revenue
o Accounts receivable
o Support timely and accurate month‑end close by ensuring all revenue streams are fully reconciled, documented, and review‑ready.
· Analysis & Reporting
o Perform monthly revenue variance analysis (actuals vs prior period, budget, and forecast), providing clear explanations for material fluctuations.
o Analyze revenue trends across multiple streams (events, programs, retail, memberships, rentals, and grants) to support management understanding and decision‑making.
o Proactively identify anomalies, or process gaps and recommend corrective actions.
o Partner with the CFO to translate operational revenue activity into management‑ready financial insights.
· System & Process Ownership
o Be the finance owner of revenue systems integration, ensuring data flowing from operational systems into QBO is complete, accurate, and appropriately summarized.
o Maintain a strong working understanding of how transactional activity in Shopify, EventPro, Raiser’s Edge, Eventbrite, and other systems translates into financial reporting.
o Assist in documenting and improving revenue workflows, reconciliations, and controls to strengthen audit readiness and reporting reliability.
o Support internal and external audits by preparing revenue reconciliations, supporting schedules, and explanatory documentation.
· Collaboration & Support
o Work collaboratively with the various departments to resolve revenue issues and clarify data flows.
o Respond to ad‑hoc revenue analysis requests and support special reporting initiatives as required.
Qualifications
o Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
o CPA designation or working toward designation an asset.
o 2–4+ years of accounting experience, ideally in an organization with multiple revenue streams.
o Demonstrated experience performing account reconciliations involving multiple source systems.
o Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate issues and explain results clearly to non‑finance colleagues.
o Experience with deferred revenue, event‑based revenue, or nonprofit accounting is an asset.
o Hands‑on experience with QuickBooks Online and advanced spreadsheet skills required (i.e. Pivot tables and Lookup Formulas).
o Familiarity with Shopify, EventPro, Raiser’s Edge, or similar systems is considered an asset.
o Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working independently while meeting deadlines.
